A wake-up call

It’s been one month since the Supreme Court gutted a key pillar of the Voting Rights Act, and what’s happened since is a legitimate crisis for democracy.

Hey Diane,

It’s been one month since the Supreme Court dismantled key parts of the Voting Rights Act.

Within hours of the ruling, lawmakers in multiple states started the process of systematically weakening the voting power of Black and brown Americans — all in an effort to gain an extra advantage in the midterms.

This should be a wake-up call for everyone who believes in fairness and equality. It should unsettle all of us who have faith in the American experiment, and the bedrock principle that every citizen should play a role in shaping our future.

Republicans are trying to undermine democracy because they care more about holding power than improving the lives of their constituents. But no matter what they may want us to believe, the most powerful title in this country is citizen. We get to decide where we go from here.

The weeks and months ahead will be tough. We will win some fights, and we may lose others.

But when we look back at this moment years from now, we should feel confident that we did everything we could to protect and strengthen our democracy.

Let’s roll up our sleeves and do the hard work of preserving the right of every American to make their voices heard. Make a donation to support the National Democratic Redistricting Committee on the front lines of this fight.

Thank you,

Barack Obama

Dianea,

I’m the hope and change guy, but I’ll be honest: we’ve got some real work to do in this country. And if we want to make progress, we’ll need leaders who tell the truth, tackle hard problems, and serve the people who put them in office in the first place.

The good news is we have the chance to elect leaders like that this year — in both houses of Congress, governorships, state legislatures, and offices up and down the ballot.

But it’s going to take all of us to do it.

It’s up to all of us, as citizens, to stand up for our values. We can’t just leave it to somebody else. We have to fight, even when it’s hard.

Republicans want you to think that a few people in power make all the decisions and the rest of us have to live with the consequences. But when you look at the history of America, real change has always come from the bottom up — from ordinary folks who make it happen.

So yes, we are being tested. But we have the power, as citizens, to change this country.

We’ve just got to use it.

Dianea, the DNC is the only organization working to elect the Democratic leaders we need at all levels of government, all across the country. When you chip in to the DNC, you’re supporting thousands of candidates we must elect this year.

So, today, I am asking you to contribute whatever you can to the DNC. It could be $5 or $50 — the amount isn't as important as the number of people choosing to use their power right now.

If you've stored your info with ActBlue, we'll process your contribution instantly.

Thank you, Dianea.

5 ways to Trump-proof our elections

There’s so much we can do right now to keep Trump from wreaking havoc on our democracy
‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌

Diane,

It’s tempting to tune out Trump’s constant threats to “take over” or “nationalize” the midterm elections, and hope that it’s just bluster or that the courts will step in to stop his attempts to suppress the vote by executive order.

But, in the words of Attorney General Eric Holder, “Doing nothing — or capitulating — while Trump destroys our democracy is not an option.” Here’s what we can all do right now to Trump-proof our elections:

  • #1: Call out MAGA's extreme redistricting in places like Texas, Missouri, and Florida. Tell your family and friends about the White House’s campaign to strong-arm Republican officials into fueling a national redistricting crisis.
  • #2: Meet them step for step on the state level — like we did by empowering voters in Virginia and California to counter the cynical GOP power grab.
  • #3: Don’t let them get away with all the lying and dirty tricks. Use social media to share the truth about how little voter fraud actually happens in America — and to push back against deceptive petition practices of dark money PACs allied with Republicans in Utah or disinformation in Virginia to mislead voters about President Obama’s views on the redistricting amendment.
  • #4: Remind everyone what's at stake here — a government that truly represents the people and the power of the people to hold their leaders accountable.
  • #5: Join forces with NDRC as we fight tooth and nail to defend our democracy.

Every dollar you contribute goes toward the battle against Trump and the MAGA movement that will do anything — even tear down our democracy — to cling to power. With your help, we’re showing that this movement is stronger than they could ever hope to be.

Thank you for helping protect our democracy,

Team NDRC
