Thanks,

Subject: We want to say thank you, with a note

Friend --

I've been in Washington for almost 40 years. I've seen a lot of Congresses come and go. But I can't remember a group of lawmakers who accomplished more than the folks who just wrapped up their work.

With their help, we repealed "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" and ratified the START arms control treaty. We passed a new law to rein in the abuses on Wall Street and protect consumers. We reformed the health care system and passed the Recovery Act to get our economy growing again.

But do you know why all that happened? Because people like you rolled up your sleeves, dug deep, and decided to make a difference. We had a dedicated group of lawmakers -- no doubt -- but they were supported every step of the way by folks from all across this country who were ready for change. People like you.

I know how much that means to me. And I can't even begin tell you how much it means to the President.

So here's the deal: President Obama wants to send you a note to express how grateful we are for all you did.

Would you like to receive one?

Two years ago, we were staring into an abyss. The financial crisis was the worst this country has faced since the Great Depression.

But this Congress passed the largest set of tax cuts for the middle class since President Reagan, the largest education reform since President Johnson, the largest infrastructure investment since President Eisenhower, and the largest clean-energy bill ever.

Now -- even though we still have a ways to go -- the economy is growing again.

Prior to this Congress, lawmakers had talked about reforming health care for almost a century. But with the President leading the way, these folks went out, and -- with you at their side -- they did it. Now 32 million more Americans will have access to health coverage.

When we came into office, just about the entire country had come to realize that "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" was wrong. More than 14,000 brave men and women had been discharged simply because of who they were. With your help, we struck down that law and made this country a more just place.

Every lawmaker who worked to accomplish these things will talk about their votes -- and the role they played in this progress -- for years. The President and I take great pride in those achievements. But each one belongs to you. You believed in them, you fought for them, and we're darn grateful.

So let the President send you a note to show our appreciation.

This holiday season, share our progress

Friend --

This time of year, Americans around the country are taking the time to exchange heartfelt messages with friends and loved ones, reflecting on the past year. They write of achievements and setbacks, of births, graduations, promotions, and moves.

These messages allow us to overcome the miles that separate us. And they allow us to continue one of the most basic American traditions that has held folks close for centuries -- the simple sharing of stories.

And as families gather around holiday tables this season, we also have the opportunity to share the stories of the change this movement has achieved together.

It is a narrative woven by individuals across America -- in big cities and small towns, hospitals and classrooms, in auto manufacturing plants and auto supply stores.

These are stories of rebuilding, and of innovation. Stories of communities breathing new life into old roads and bridges, of local plants harnessing alternative fuel into new energy. Stories of small businesses getting up, dusting themselves off, and beginning to grow again. Stories of soldiers who served multiple tours of duty in Iraq now coming home -- and enjoying the holidays this year in the company of loved ones.

These are stories of progress.

They unite us, and they are ours to share.

We've pulled many of them together in one place, PROGRESS. You can see what our reforms have meant to Americans in every state -- block by block, community by community.

Click here to read about stories of progress in your area -- and share them with your friends and family.

The reforms that we fought long and hard for are not talking points.

And their effects don't change based on the whims of politicians in Washington. They are achievements that have a real and meaningful impact on the lives of Americans around the country. They are achievements that would not have been possible without you. PROGRESS localizes them -- and brings them to life.

It tells of how a green technology business in Phoenix, Arizona, is using a grant through the Recovery Act's Transportation Electrification program to bring the first electric-drive vehicles and charging stations to cities around the country.

It tells how, thanks to closing the "donut hole" in prescription drug coverage, a diabetic woman in Burlington, Vermont will no longer have to choose between purchasing her monthly groceries or the insulin she needs to survive.

It tells about how 76,000 Virginia residents' jobs were saved or created by the Recovery Act.

And about how, thanks to the Affordable Care Act, 16,000 small businesses in Virginia's 1st Congressional District are now eligible for health care tax credits -- and how 8,200 residents in Virginia's 1st with pre-existing conditions can no longer be denied coverage.

There are thousands more stories like these.

In the coming days, as we gather with our loved ones at dinner tables around the nation, let's pass them on. Let's celebrate the spirit of service and responsibility that brought them to fruition. And let's steady ourselves with the resolve to continue pressing forward.

Because the coming year will hold new challenges -- battles that have yet to be fought, and stories of progress that have yet to be written.

Take a look at the progress we've made in your area -- and share the stories you read with your friends and family:

Happy holidays, and God bless,

Barack

P.S. -- Last week, seven OFA volunteers joined me at the White House for a special meeting -- and they brought along your feedback from the Vote 2010 campaign. It was incredibly meaningful for me to be able to hear directly from supporters like you. And your input will be front and center as we plot our course moving forward into the new year. Please take a couple minutes to check out some photos and stories from the meeting.

Don't Ask, Don't Tell

Friend --

Hours ago, the Senate voted to end "Don't Ask, Don't Tell."

When that bill reaches my desk, I will sign it, and this discriminatory law will be repealed.

Gay and lesbian service members -- brave Americans who enable our freedoms -- will no longer have to hide who they are.

The fight for civil rights, a struggle that continues, will no longer include this one.

This victory belongs to you. Without your commitment, the promise I made as a candidate would have remained just that.

Instead, you helped prove again that no one should underestimate this movement. Every phone call to a senator on the fence, every letter to the editor in a local paper, and every message in a congressional inbox makes it clear to those who would stand in the way of justice: We will not quit.

This victory also belongs to Senator Harry Reid, Speaker Nancy Pelosi, and our many allies in Congress who refused to let politics get in the way of what was right.

Like you, they never gave up, and I want them to know how grateful we are for that commitment.

Will you join me in thanking them by adding your name to Organizing for America's letter?

I will make sure these messages are delivered -- you can also add a comment about what the repeal of "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" means to you.

As Commander in Chief, I fought to repeal "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" because it weakens our national security and military readiness. It violates the fundamental American principles of equality and fairness.

But this victory is also personal.

I will never know what it feels like to be discriminated against because of my sexual orientation.

But I know my story would not be possible without the sacrifice and struggle of those who came before me -- many I will never meet, and can never thank.

I know this repeal is a crucial step for civil rights, and that it strengthens our military and national security. I know it is the right thing to do.

But the rightness of our cause does not guarantee success, and today, celebration of this historic step forward is tempered by the defeat of another -- the DREAM Act. I am incredibly disappointed that a minority of senators refused to move forward on this important, commonsense reform that most Americans understand is the right thing for our country. On this issue, our work must continue.

Today, I'm proud that we took these fights on.

Please join me in thanking those in Congress who helped make "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" repeal possible:

http://my.barackobama.com/Repealed

Thank you,

Barack

Not done fighting on DADT

Organizing for America
Friend --

This afternoon, a discriminatory policy that deprives our military of qualified troops, endangers our national security, and violates the simple American principles of integrity, fairness, and equality was allowed to remain law.

Every Republican senator but one -- Senator Susan Collins -- voted to prevent the passage of legislation to repeal "Don't Ask, Don't Tell."

Several of them had previously claimed to support repeal, but voted "no" today.

It's a frustrating setback, but here's the good news: We are just three votes away from moving forward on repeal.

And Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and our allies in the Senate are promising another vote on repeal before Congress heads home for the year. There is still a chance for this to pass.

Allies in the Senate are not done fighting. The President is not done fighting. And I know you're not, either.

Write the Republicans standing in the way in the Senate -- and tell them to get on the right side of history.

There's no question that today's vote was disappointing.

But we also have a lot of reasons to be proud today.

The letters to the editor you wrote and the phone calls you made -- and the 582,000 petitions you signed -- have been crucial in building support for repeal.

This morning, OFA volunteers delivered those petitions to Senator Collins' office. And this afternoon, she voted to move this bill forward.

Now your work can help make sure we secure the votes necessary to finally put an end to this unfair policy.

One final push might be all it takes.

I know we still have a lot of fight left in us. Write Republicans now -- and tell them to stop standing in the way:

Tax cuts

Organizing for America
Friend --

Yesterday, the President announced the framework of a bipartisan agreement to extend a set of tax cuts that were set to expire, restore unemployment benefits for millions of Americans, and pass additional measures to help middle-class families and create jobs.

Now, he's recorded a video to speak directly to OFA supporters about the deal. Watch it here -- and leave a note with your thoughts.

Watch the message from President Obama

This agreement, while not perfect, is vital to millions of Americans who are out of work through no fault of their own -- as well as millions of middle-class families, students, parents, and small businesses.

Take a minute to watch his message -- and then let us know what you think:

Obstructionism

Organizing for America
Friend --

The President's opponents in Congress are gearing up for a fight.

Their plan? Obstruct progress and delay action on our agenda during these last few weeks of this session of Congress.

Which battles go our way is unknown -- what's certain is that failure to act will hurt the economy, the middle class, the unemployed, the military, and our national security.

Because among other critical items, our agenda includes extending tax cuts for the middle class, repealing "Don't Ask, Don't Tell," making sure those who are out of work get the relief they need, passing the DREAM Act, and ratifying the New START Treaty -- a nuclear arms agreement critical to national security.

These issues aren't going away, and we can't afford to let Congress kick them down the road to the next set of legislators -- or the next generation.

Organizing for America is waging a campaign to make sure Congress takes action on these critical priorities before the end of the year -- but we need your help. We're counting on 2 donations from Yorktown to get the job done.

Will you pitch in $3 or more now to support Organizing for America and help continue to push back on obstructionism?

We're talking about legislation that will help Americans of all stripes, in every state. Almost every one has strong bipartisan support.

We're fighting to make sure middle-class Americans don't wake up on January 1st with higher taxes.

We're fighting for an arms agreement that every U.S. president since Reagan has renewed or supported.

We're fighting to repeal legislation that prevents brave Americans from serving openly alongside their fellow troops -- a repeal endorsed by top military leaders that a Pentagon study just confirmed will have no impact on readiness or morale.

We're fighting for unemployment benefits for Americans when they need it most.

If we fail to act on these items, those who will pay for that failure are not politicians in Washington -- they're our neighbors, our troops, our classmates, and our friends and family.

But some in Congress are proving that they're willing to put politics over people, no matter what the cost.

We're making sure they don't get away with it. We're sending a much different message -- one of action, organizing, and progress -- and we're making sure that's the message that reaches Congress.

So organizers and supporters like you are on the ground, reaching out to their communities. We're writing letters to the editors of newspapers across the country. We're pressuring Congress with calls from their constituents.

But this organizing, as always, relies on support from folks like you.

Please donate $3 or more right now to help us fight back:

Big news on "Don't Ask, Don't Tell"

Organizing for America
Friend --

It's time.

The Pentagon study released yesterday confirms what we've long known: The military is ready to repeal "Don't Ask, Don't Tell."

The report found that 70 percent of troops do not believe the change would have a negative impact on morale, and troop readiness would not be affected.

This important news means that we are closer than ever to ending this discriminatory policy that punishes patriotic men and women who want nothing more than to serve our country -- and harms our own security by preventing qualified and much-needed Americans from serving.

Last time, we were just two votes shy of passing repeal in the Senate. And now the lawmakers who have been dragging their feet have no excuses left.

Neither do we. On this issue, our voices may not get more powerful than they are today -- after the military has weighed in, when the media is paying close attention, just before the Senate starts its debate.

Let's ensure the Senate passes repeal -- and sends it to President Obama's desk -- before the end of the year.

Please add your name to the President's call to repeal "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" now.

The release of the Pentagon's report is just one more sign that the days are numbered for "Don't Ask, Don't Tell."

But the Republican opposition in the Senate -- led by Senator John McCain -- is already digging in its heels.

People like Sen. McCain said they would defer to military leadership -- and then refused to budge when people like Chairman of the Joint Chiefs Admiral Mike Mullen, Defense Secretary Robert Gates, and former Secretary of State Colin Powell all came forward to support repeal.

These senators said they were worried about how repeal would weaken our military or hurt troop morale -- and that we should wait for the results of the Pentagon study.

Well, the results are in: Our military believes the time has come to end "Don't Ask, Don't Tell."

We know that some of these senators are going to do everything they can to shift their standards once again. But we don't need them all to agree with us -- we just need two more votes to end this policy once and for all.

With the hearings set to begin tomorrow, it's important we make our voices heard now.

Join President Obama -- and add your name to the call for repeal:

http://my.barackobama.com/RepealDADT

Thanks -- now let's make history,

Mitch

Thankful

Friend --

When Michelle and I sit down with our family to give thanks today, I want you to know that we'll be especially grateful for folks like you.

Everything we have been able to accomplish in the last two years was possible because you have been willing to work for it and organize for it.

And every time we face a setback, or when progress doesn't happen as quickly as we would like, we know that you'll be right there with us, ready to fight another day.

So I want to thank you -- for everything.

I also hope you'll join me in taking a moment to remember that the freedoms and security we enjoy as Americans are protected by the brave men and women of the United States Armed Forces. These patriots are willing to lay down their lives in our defense, and each of us owes them and their families a debt of gratitude.

Have a wonderful day, and God bless.

Your thoughts, in the President's hands

Organizing for America
Friend --

In the six months leading up to Election Day, supporters like you reached out to more than 80 million voters on phone lines and doorsteps across the country -- making the difference in dozens of key races.

And -- one conversation at a time -- the commitments to vote that you secured helped grow this movement. That kind of work transcends the results of a single election. Thank you.

Organizing for America started with you -- your voices, your ideas, and your feet on the ground.

And from the beginning, your vision for the future has propelled our work to move this country forward. From historic health insurance reform to the strongest consumer protections ever put in place, we have begun to make the change we envisioned a reality.

But we still have so much left to accomplish together. That's why now, with November's elections behind us and a new year on the horizon, we're planning our next steps. We can't do that without hearing from the people who brought us here -- supporters like you.

We've put together a short survey to make sure we capture everyone's ideas. In the coming weeks, we'll report back with the results -- and they'll go straight into the President's hands, hand-delivered by OFA volunteers in early December.

Please take a minute to take this survey and share your thoughts about the future of this movement.

We've always known that big change doesn't begin with a top-down mandate -- it begins at the grassroots.

It begins with the kind of ideas that inspire us all to get out and do the real work of organizing -- knocking on doors, making calls, and pitching in what we can to build support in our communities.

Your voice built and sustained this movement. And now, your voice will keep it moving forward.

Please take our short survey now and share your ideas. We'll make sure the President sees what you have to say:

http://my.barackobama.com/YourThoughts

Together, we'll keep making lasting change that matters.

Thanks,

Mitch

What we did together

Organizing for America
Friend --

As the President said last week, "some election nights are more fun than others. Some are exhilarating; some are humbling."

Last Tuesday took place in a very difficult electoral environment. But I'm incredibly proud of the work we did this year. The plan we built and implemented together was unprecedented in an election like this -- it helped make the difference for dozens of good candidates, and it laid the groundwork for the fights ahead.

We put together a page to illustrate the impact we had.

Take a look at the work we did together.

In six months, Democrats, on front porches and on the phones, reached out to more than 80 million voters across the country. Volunteers organized 36,994 events in their neighborhoods, building on an infrastructure that was already the most ambitious grassroots operation in politics.

For get-out-the-vote weekend, you filled more than 200,000 volunteer shifts at 2,839 GOTV staging locations.

As Linda in Henderson, Nevada, said, "The most gratifying experience was talking to people one-on-one and telling them what the President and Senator Reid are doing. [We] really engaged people -- all different generations wanted to know how we were going to make our country better."

On Election Day, some folks on the West Coast got up at 4:00 a.m. to make calls to voters on the East Coast, and some East Coasters stayed on the phones until midnight, when the last polls closed in Hawaii and Alaska.

On a tough night, there were a few key races where this work put us over the top -- despite being outspent by corporate interests.

Take a look at the recap we put together -- and share it with friends:

http://my.barackobama.com/WhatWeDidTogether

The work we did together was not just about winning a single election, but about building this movement. It's about organizing our communities, talking to voters, and getting our message out.

It wouldn't have been possible without you.

As we move forward, I'm optimistic about the fights ahead because of the energy and effort you gave this one. And, as we lay out the path forward, we'll be relying heavily on your thoughts and your feedback.

I'm proud to fight alongside you.

Veterans Day

Friend --

Veterans Day provides us with the chance to mark the debt of honor we owe to all those who have worn the uniform of the United States. We remember those who gave their lives beneath our flag, in service of our freedom.

And with so many still fighting, we owe special thanks to the courageous families of those who serve.

Because when our servicemen and women deploy overseas, their loved ones are left to undertake heroic battles of their own at home. The unique challenges they face in support of men and women in uniform allow us all to enjoy the freedoms of our democracy.

Every time I have a chance to meet with these families, I'm struck by their strength and their quiet dignity -- they are truly some of the most selfless, courageous people I've met.

And today is also a day to acknowledge the sacrifices these brave men and women make every day, and pray for the safe return of those they love.

I've felt their calling personally, and I want to encourage Americans across the country to step up and do more for our military families. Take the time to stay informed about the concerns and activities of the families of service members in your community. Let them know you recognize their struggles and appreciate all they do.

You can help by finding out the needs of the military families in your community and volunteering, from working with your local school's PTA to hiring a military spouse.

Today and every day, I am moved by the personal sacrifices made by service families. And I'm humbled by the patriotism of those they support -- our soldiers and airmen, our sailors and Marines.

Today, if you can, please take a moment to offer your gratitude for the families of the veterans and active service members that you know. Or go online to serve.gov to find out how you can serve military families in your area.

Sincerely,

Michelle

Urgent -- how many calls can you make right now?

Organizing for America
Friend --

It's Election Day, and we all need to call voters for 20 minutes.

We know there are millions of people across the country who might not cast their ballots -- unless they hear from someone like you. These people -- whether they vote or not -- will be the difference in the closest races.

That's why thousands of supporters are using our call tool after they vote today to make sure these folks get to the polls.

You can talk to these people right now. You can remind them of the importance of their voice in this election. You can tell them where their local polling place is -- and when it closes its doors.

It's all one click away. Start right now -- because "later" will be too late.

Can you take 20 minutes to call some of these voters in key districts?

This election will determine the direction our country takes over the next two years.

Once the polls close, we can only watch the results come in.

Those results are being determined right now. And we can do a whole lot more than just watch.

As long as the polls are still open, you can have a real impact on the races that will come down to the wire.

Join thousands of supporters just like you for the final push -- and pick up the phone now:

http://my.barackobama.com/E-DayCalls

Thanks -- now let's get to work,

Tomorrow

Friend --

Tomorrow, you can help determine not just the outcome of this election, but our country's future.

You made the difference in 2008. Now, once again, you can defy the conventional wisdom that says you can't overcome the cynicism of our politics; you can't overcome the special interests and the big money; you can't tackle our biggest challenges.

This movement has never backed down from a tough fight -- and we're not about to start.

Over the next two years, we've got to keep moving America forward -- but I need allies in office to make it happen.

I need you to make sure you get at least three of your friends to vote with you -- it is simply the most important thing you can do to make sure we can keep bringing about change.

Millions and millions of our supporters have already cast their ballots this year in key states like Ohio, Florida, Iowa, and Illinois -- and every vote you turn out will help move America forward.

Find your polling place and the time polls are open here.

If you have already voted, please click here to help in these final hours of our Vote 2010 campaign.

When we arrived in Washington, we knew the road ahead would be difficult.

Our country was facing the worst economic downturn since the Great Depression -- with 8 million jobs gone -- because of nearly a decade of policies that put corporations and special interests before ordinary Americans.

Two short years later -- together -- we have begun to rebuild our economy on the values of hard work and responsibility.

Private employers and small businesses have created jobs nine months in a row. And 3 million Americans would not be working today if not for the investments that you, and our Democratic allies in Congress, helped put in place.

Because of you, there are families all across the country who will never have to choose between losing their home and treating an illness. Because of you, millions of parents can look at their kids and know the opportunity of a college education is within reach. Because of you, a business owner got a small business loan and is keeping her doors open. And because of you, thousands of our brave men and women are home from fighting in Iraq.

I know that even with these changes -- and the progress you've fought for -- too many families are still struggling. We have so much more to do.

And that's exactly why America cannot afford to go back.

We must continue to move forward, and the decisions voters make in your area will determine which direction this country takes for generations.

We want to keep taxes low for the middle class, so you can pay your bills.

We want to give tax breaks to American companies who create jobs and spur innovation right here in America, not make it easier for them to ship jobs overseas.

We will fight efforts to privatize Social Security, and stop the other side from handing over the retirement savings of a generation to Wall Street.

We refuse to go back to the days when big oil and insurance companies wrote their own rules and ran up record profits, while you paid for it at the pump or faced bankruptcy as health bills piled up.

The other side has different ideas.

Washington Republicans have tried to block our progress at every turn. And worse, they're campaigning on taking us back to the exact same agenda that brought us to the brink of disaster: Cut taxes for the wealthy at the expense of the middle class while ballooning the deficit. Give free rein to Wall Street speculators. Lower the minimum wage for millions of hard-working families. Privatize Social Security. And allow insurance companies to deny children health coverage based on pre-existing conditions.

The problem is we know what this looks like -- and we know it doesn't work.

We cannot relive that past.

Don't let them tell you that change isn't possible. Because here's what I know: Nothing in America has ever been easy.

The only reason we're here is because, in past generations, Americans came together, even in the face of impossible odds. That's how we got through war. That's how we got through depression. That's why we have civil rights, and women's rights, and workers' rights.

We've asked you to do so much since we started this journey together, and you've always come through.

And now, I'm asking you to come together once more to cast your vote for Democrats tomorrow.

With your vote -- and the votes of at least three of your friends -- we'll continue to grow this economy and restore the middle class to its rightful place, and the American Dream will be alive and well once again.

In the next half hour

Organizing for America
Friend --

A couple things are going to happen in the next half hour.

Partisan attack ads funded by big banks and big oil will air over and over on national cable television.

Outrageous right-wing smear messages will arrive in inboxes around the country.

And dozens of voters in Yorktown will make a decision about whether they'll be voting in this year's election.

They're people who might not currently be planning on making it to the polls in two days.

They're people who might not know what's at stake -- who might not know the choice we all have in this election.

All of that is happening in the next 30 minutes. The only question is, will you be the person who changes the equation by picking up the phone?

Grab your phone and click here to connect with voters in your area right now.

We're not the only ones who want to get voters out to the polls this election season.

The other side has a plan, too.

Theirs is a plan that outsources its messaging to big special interest groups that don't have to disclose where they're getting their millions in donations.

It's a plan that thinks that big money deserves a big mouthpiece.

And right now, it's a plan at work in close districts around the country.

So in this moment, you can choose whether or not to counter it with your voice.

You can join the thousands of supporters around the country calling from their kitchens and their living rooms -- coffee shops and cubicles.

Because we know that this is when our most important work is done. And we know that we are the very best ones to do it.

There are just two days left until Election Day -- two days to have the kinds of one-on-one conversations that we know make the difference in close races.

And right now, the single best way you can affect how many people are at the polls on November 2nd is by using your voice, right now.

Click this link and get started today:

The final stretch in Hampton

Friend --

When Barack got back from a recent campaign swing, he couldn't stop talking about how every supporter he met was fired up.

From amazing crowds at his rallies with great candidates like Harry Reid and Barbara Boxer to meeting some of the OFA volunteers who are part of this effort, he couldn't be prouder of what you're doing.

And continuing that organizing in these final days -- with person-to-person conversations on doorsteps and on the phone -- is the single most important thing that any of us can do to ensure we're successful at getting out the vote.

There are thousands of phone banks and canvasses happening as part of get-out-the-vote efforts through November 2nd to make the difference in tight races across the country -- can you make it out in Hampton?

Here are the details:

What: Get-out-the-vote event

Where: VA_02_J_H & R Block
2074 Nickerson Blvd
Hampton, VA 23663

When: Sunday, October 31st
12:00 pm

Yes, I can make it.

No, I can't make it.

In addition to the event at 12:00 pm on Sunday, there are events throughout each day, through Tuesday. Find others you can make it to here.

Thousands and thousands of you are out there every day, spreading the word about all we've done together over the last two years -- and how we need folks to vote for Democrats in order to keep moving America forward.

And Barack and I need you to keep it up in the final stretch -- please let us know if you can make it out in Hampton:

Thanks so much for all you do,

Michelle

7 in 7 Daily Report: Thursday

Please enable images to view the full content of this email
When a person visualizes how they'll take an action in the future, the likelihood they will do it at all goes up significantly -- and that's especially true for voting since it's not part of a daily routine like exercise, eating, or a favorite TV show. Developing a specific Election Day plan with a voter can double the impact of your call. So when making Get Out The Vote calls, help folks make their voting plan real. Walk them through when and how they will get to the polls and where they will be coming from.
