| February is a month of milestones for me, Diane. It marks the anniversary of my confirmation to become the first Black Attorney General of the United States. It's also Black History Month — a time to celebrate the Black changemakers who built and shaped this country. One of the key lessons I took away from my six years in President Obama's administration is: History doesn't just happen. We are the ones who create and shape it. So as we celebrate the changemakers who came before us, we must also remember that our work to secure the freedoms many literally gave their lives for is far from over. We must recognize the unique challenges that we face when it comes to creating fair maps for marginalized communities. Over and over again too many of our fellow citizens have been denied an equal say in our government. And we must work to ensure that no matter how the forces of ignorance and bigotry might try to erase, ignore or minimize our shared history, that we continue to shape our stories with purpose and pride. Some people these days would love nothing more than for you to be cynical about politics, about government, about the possibilities for our future. They want you to think that all of this is out of your control — that history is essentially pre-determined and that our hands working together can't help, to paraphrase Dr. King, bend the moral arc of the universe toward justice. I implore you: Don't believe them. We're in the middle of an existential fight for our democracy, to secure those fundamental values of freedom and fairness for all. None of us can do it alone, but WE can do it together. The NDRC will never stop working towards a better, fairer democracy with better, fairer maps — for all. We're in it for the long haul, the extended effort, and we need you with us. Thank you, Eric H. Holder, Jr.
