William's future

Friend --

I want to tell you about a family in Minnesota.

Justin and Kari live in Brooklyn Park, right outside of Minneapolis. They're parents to three children. Their three-year-old, William, was born with a genetic disorder called tuberous sclerosis complex.

For the rest of his life, William will wrestle with tumors in his brain, his heart, his kidneys, his skin, and possibly other major organs. He must take medication to control seizures and faces the threat of kidney disease.

What Justin and Kari want for William is a future. And because of health reform, that's what he'll have.

Today, insurance companies are no longer able to discriminate against William because of the condition he's dealt with since birth. Now, Justin and Kari know they'll be able to get the kind of care that William needs -- today and into the future.

Their story isn't unique, but it's one of many that need to be told. We all know people whose lives have been changed because of the Affordable Care Act, even if we don't realize it. So we've found a way to show exactly how reform is working for all of us -- for our parents, our siblings, our kids, ourselves.

Will you take a minute to take our Health Reform Checkup and let the people you love know how reform is working for them?

Before the Affordable Care Act, Justin and Kari weren't sure about the future. They worried that they'd never be able to find coverage for William again if Justin lost his job. They worried about the life that William would lead -- whether he'd ever be able to work or support a family.

Not anymore. William's condition isn't going away, but he'll always be able to get care. The Affordable Care Act is one year old today, and it has already changed William's life -- and this country -- for good.

Today, there are families who feel better about the future than they did a year ago. They've found some security, some relief. And these are people we know. They're our neighbors, our colleagues, our friends, our families -- the people next to us every day.

On the one-year anniversary of the Affordable Care Act, I think we have a duty to discuss how reform is already working.

Watch Justin and Kari tell their story, and take a moment to learn how health reform is changing the lives of those you know:

A year ago, I stood next to the President as he signed health reform into law -- and we have you to thank for making that possible.

Yours,

Joe

Have you made your summer plans?

Organizing for America
Friend --

"I wanted to help my local community, and learn more about where I live and the people that are around."

That's why Anand from Colorado was a summer organizer -- and now, she's a regional field director for Organizing for America.

"I saw that you could get people inspired with Twitter and Facebook ...and I volunteered all these hours because of one message on Facebook."

That's why Candice in California was a summer organizing fellow -- and now she's using those skills as a new media director for a mayoral campaign.

What will you say after your summer with us?

We've put together a short video of some past summer organizers sharing their experiences -- please check it out, and then apply to be a 2011 summer organizer.

Watch the summer organizers video.

Summer organizers will be trained in the basic principles that have always built and powered effective grassroots movements. They'll work directly in communities around the country to organize supporters street by street, neighborhood by neighborhood.

And they'll recruit volunteers, run events, knock on doors, and work hard to support the President and Democrats across the country.

By summer's end, their work will have built upon an impressive national grassroots structure that will help us fight for the issues that matter most.

Apply to be a summer organizer today -- or pass this along to someone you know who might be interested. The deadline to apply is April 18th:

"I will not let it happen."

Organizing for America
Friend --

President Obama said this week that any budget that sacrifices a commitment to education is a budget that sacrifices our future:

"And I will not let it happen."

Here's why he's taking a stand:

The cuts in the House Republican budget to education would be devastating for teachers, students, and families -- costing 55,000 jobs, slashing financial aid for 8 million college kids, and dropping hundreds of thousands from Head Start, an early-education program proven to help low-income children graduate high school.

This week, the House passed another short-term extension of the federal budget that will fund the government through early April -- between now and then, we need to find common ground.

President Obama is committed to commonsense spending cuts that allow us to live within our means without sacrificing key investments that will help us win the future.

With your support today, we can redouble our campaign for a responsible budget as the deadline nears, with OFA volunteers calling lawmakers and hand-delivering petitions to congressional offices.

Together, we'll work to make sure that every family, principal, teacher, and student across the country understands that critical funding for education is at stake -- and what they can do about it.

Please donate $3 or more today to support Organizing for America and fight to protect our investments in education.

House Republicans are proposing reckless cuts that would undo our progress on health reform, prevent the EPA from protecting our air and water, and hurt our economy and job creation.

The cuts are particularly bad for education, and when we're talking about investing in children and schools, we're talking about investing in our future.

If the House Republican budget cuts are adopted:

     -- More than 16,000 classrooms would close;

     -- 55,000 teachers would lose their jobs;

-- Nearly 200,000 pre-kindergarten children would lose access to Head Start; and

-- More than 8 million college students currently receiving tuition assistance would see their Pell Grants cut.

The budget the President signs must have bipartisan support, but he's made it clear it also must invest in -- not sacrifice -- education.

Anything less is irresponsible and not worthy of our children.

Your support today will ensure all Americans understand what's at stake. We'll stand together and support the President as he tries once again to reach common ground with Republicans.

But we need your help.

Please donate $3 or more to support Organizing for America today:

Thanks for standing up for teachers, kids, and jobs.

Common sense

Organizing for America
Friend --

If the Republican budget passes, 19,500 people across Virginia will lose their jobs.

They're trying to push through drastic cuts to everything from education to environmental protections -- risking our economic recovery to pursue their social agenda.

President Obama won't let that happen.

He said he's willing to work together to pass a commonsense plan that responsibly cuts spending, but he refuses to sign any budget that could derail our recovery or put hundreds of thousands of Americans out of work.

But if Republicans don't come to the negotiating table ready to find a solution in the next 11 days, the federal government will be forced to shut down -- cutting off vital services for millions.

That is an outcome we can avoid -- but only if we make it clear to Republicans that it's time to put partisan politics aside and come together to find a reasonable solution.

Stand against the reckless Republican budget today -- and call on them to come to the table to pass a commonsense budget.

OFA volunteers will hand-deliver each and every signature to House Republicans as the standoff in Congress heats up.

Because the President is committed to a responsible solution -- one that cuts wasteful spending without cutting investments critical to winning the future.

But as it stands, the Republican position is a non-starter. It satisfies only one group -- their right-wing base -- while devastating millions of people who rely on the programs being cut.

In addition to telling nearly a million Americans they're out of a job, their plan:

    -- Guts investments in education -- even dropping 3,340 Virginia children from Head Start;

    -- Cuts Virginia homeland security investments by $2.2 million, hindering local law enforcement's ability to keep our families safe;

-- Prevents the government from implementing health reform, rolling back critical patient protections and cost savings, and returning control of your health care to insurance companies.

-- Slashes important women's health and family-planning services that millions of Americans rely on; and

-- Ends protections that keep our food safe and our air and water clean.

The reality is any funding plan that passes will be bipartisan. It can't be about one party's political agenda if we're going to find common ground in time to keep the government running.

President Obama knows it. But it's up to the American people to remind the other side that a seat at the table doesn't mean they get to call all the shots.

Stand up to the Republicans in Congress -- tell them to stand down from their radical proposal and work with President Obama:

We'll keep you posted about how you can help as the negotiations develop.

Thanks,

Mitch
