I want to make sure this message gets through:

Diane --

Right now, the hard work we've put in to get our economy back on track is at risk. And there's only one reason for it: A group of far-right Republicans in Congress is obsessed with making an ideological point.

They refuse to pass a budget unless I let them sabotage Obamacare, something they know is not going to happen. Now, we're left with only four days before a government shutdown.

This is reckless and irresponsible. Republicans are not focused on what's best for you. They're playing political games.

I called House Speaker John Boehner the other night to tell him that Americans like you have worked too long and too hard to dig our nation out of the financial crisis, and the last thing we need is for Washington to manufacture another.

I want to make sure that message gets through. Add your voice -- remind Speaker Boehner that Congress has a job to do.

Passing a budget is the most basic duty the Constitution gives to Congress.

Congress needs to hear from the people who sent them to Washington.

As we get closer to the September 30th deadline, that might mean picking up the phone, getting the facts out to friends on social media, or showing up at your local congressional office. OFA will be asking a lot of you, and I hope you'll get involved.

Start today by telling Speaker Boehner that Congress must come together to pass a budget:

Super-quick question

Friend --

The First Lady knows exactly how important the grassroots work we're doing is.

If you haven't responded to her question yet, take a minute -- answer this one-question survey and let us know what gets you fired up:

Friend --

You can't just want change.

You've got to fight for it, too. Barack and I hear that's exactly what you're doing -- thank you.

This work matters. Just look at the August congressional recess: For the first time in a long time, our side built some real momentum over the summer -- on everything from immigration reform to climate change. That's all you.

You're the heart and soul of this organization. That's why OFA wants to hear directly from you.

So, if you had to pick, what is the number one issue that drives you to keep fighting?

http://my.barackobama.com/Just-One-Question

I had the privilege of helping get Organizing for Action off the ground earlier this year, and I'm excited about where you're taking it.

There's a lot of work still ahead. As Barack says: Winning an election doesn't bring about the change we seek. It simply gives us the chance to make that change.

You're embracing that opportunity -- and all Americans will be better off for it.

Thanks,

Michelle

Say NO to a shutdown

Organizing for Action
Diane --

Some people are just obsessed with trying to mess with President Obama -- right now, some House Republicans are even willing to shut down the government because they don't like Obamacare.

We might not ever get through to some of the most extreme members of Congress. The problem is that Speaker Boehner is letting them run the show on the budget fight.

That's only going to stop if the American people demand it -- and there are just five days left to go to pass a budget.

We need to push harder -- will you chip in $5 or more today?

Congress passed Obamacare more than three years ago -- and last year, the Supreme Court upheld the law. And, after two years of interest groups railing against health reform, a strong majority of the American people voted for an agenda that embraces it.

Still, the House has voted more than 40 times to try to tear down Obamacare. Someone needs to get these guys a support group.

At the very least, they shouldn't have their hands on the wheel during the fight to pass a smart budget.

Tell Speaker Boehner enough already -- chip in $5 today to help keep the pressure on:

Tonight: President Obama addresses the nation on Syria

Organizing for Action
Diane --

I've heard a lot from supporters about Syria over the last week. This debate is an important one for our country.

For everyone asking for more information, I wanted to make sure you had the chance to hear from President Obama himself.

He's addressing the nation tonight -- you can watch it live here at 9:00 p.m. Eastern Time:

There's a lot to do to pass the agenda Americans voted for last fall -- that's work that we'll remain focused on. More on that soon.

For now, thank you for everything you do.

Tell Congress: Shutting down the government is not an option

Organizing for Action
Diane --

There's been a lot of talk about whether Congress will pass a budget by the end of this month -- or instead, as some have called for, let the government shut down.

I want to spell out exactly what a shutdown would mean:

Nearly all federal programs -- and the people they work for -- would suffer. We're talking delayed military pay and veterans' benefits. Shutting down Head Start centers, and Meals on Wheels programs. Delayed applications for new Social Security enrollments, and loans for students and small businesses.

One thing is clear: Shutting down the government will hurt the American people.

Add your name -- tell Congress that shutting down the government isn't an option.

When some members of Congress talk about a government shutdown, they frame it as a viable bargaining chip -- just part of the debate over the budget.

The truth is, a government shutdown will shutter crucial services the American people depend on and wreak havoc with our economy.

President Obama has put forth a smart plan for the budget -- and he's said he's willing to hear new ideas from people on both sides of the aisle. The budget Congress passes needs to continue to grow the economy from the middle out.

So far in this debate, though, some members of Congress have shown they're just not serious about doing right by the people they represent.

Our elected officials shouldn't use the economy, the budget, or even the threat of taking away health care from millions of Americans just to score political points with their base.

Add your name now -- and tell Congress to avoid a government shutdown and pass a smart budget:

http://my.barackobama.com/Pass-a-Budget

Thanks,

Lindsay

The Time to Serve is Now! 9/11 Day of Service 2013

9/11 - V2
9/11 Day of Service 2012: Working with the Community

September 11, 2013 is almost here and in the days leading up to the September 11th National Day of Service and Remembrance many Americans across the country are rolling up their sleeves in service and fellowship. Are you ready to get out and serve

Making time to volunteer for the September 11th National Day of Service and Remembrance is a great way to engage with your community while honoring the victims and survivors of 9/11. Whether you plan on grabbing a paintbrush, mentoring a young person or helping to clean up a public space in the next few days, know that what you do makes a world of difference.

Still looking for a way to participate in your area? Sign up for a project near you in honor of the day.

Looking to plan your own project or student lesson? It's never too late! Check out our website for many helpful planning and educator resources.

Already connected to a project? Take a moment to dedicate your service on 9/11, reflect on why you are serving and share your thoughts and photos from the day:

  • Tweet about your day to @ServeDotGov with the hashtag #911Day
  • Get connected with other volunteers or participate in the dialogue on Facebook.
  • Remember to add your volunteer service to your LinkedIn profile; volunteering can help build valuable skills as well as get the word out about the organizations and causes you care about most!

The September 11th National Day of Service and Remembrance is the culmination of an effort originally launched in 2002 by 9/11 family members and support groups and led by the organization MyGoodDeed. These individuals and organizations worked to establish the service day as a way to honor those who were lost and to rekindle the spirit of unity and compassion that followed the attacks. The September 11th National Day of Service and Remembrance was established into law by the Edward M. Kennedy Serve America Act in 2009, and furthers President Obama's call to service, United We Serve.
