re: the path forward

President Obama said: "But even in the face of these threats, I'm inspired by this movement's commitment to our democracy."

As we enter 2022 -- and the next phase of defending fair maps, challenging gerrymandered maps, and championing voting rights -- we just wanted to take a moment to thank everyone in the All On The Line movement.

And if you haven't had the chance yet, take a look below at the end-of-year message President Obama sent to AOTL supporters!

Thanks for all you do,

Friend -- 2021 marked the start of the redistricting process and a shift in the fight for voting rights.

Over the last few months, state legislatures in places like Texas and Georgia have enacted laws designed to prevent American citizens from exercising their right to vote. And those same states -- as well as others like Ohio and North Carolina -- have used gerrymandered maps to unfairly eliminate competitive congressional districts.

But even in the face of these threats, I'm inspired by this movement's commitment to our democracy. Will you consider making a donation to All On The Line so our work can continue in 2022?

Here's what grassroots donors like you made possible in 2021:

→ Tens of thousands of people took action to demand democracy reforms that would protect voting rights and end partisan congressional gerrymandering.
→ More than 30,000 people joined All On The Line's events and trainings across the country on everything from the basics of redistricting to how to give effective input at public hearings.
→ AOTL's team of mapping experts analyzed districts drawn by state legislatures and commissions to help give voters more information about the fairness or unfairness of different proposals.

All of this represents important progress. But the fight isn't over yet. Republican state legislatures are still working to disenfranchise voters and tilt the playing field in their favor -- and national Republicans are refusing to even allow a debate over legislation that would protect our democracy.

That's why it's so important to pass commonsense voting rights legislation like the Freedom to Vote Act, make sure congressional maps are being drawn fairly, and protect the integrity of our elections.

All On The Line has been incredibly effective at blunting some of the worst impacts of partisan gerrymandering, exposing the most egregious power grabs, and protecting the right to vote.

I am with you every step of the way, and I know you understand the urgency of this moment.

Can I count on you to make a contribution right now to All On The Line before the end of the year? The fight for fair maps will continue in 2022 and we need your help.

-- Barack Obama

Hi Diane,

I wanted to share some inside info with you from some of our final staff discussions in 2021. (Spoiler alert: The NDRC is going to be busy in 2022, so it's really important to hit our $199,000 end-of-year goal -- you can chip in here to help.)

Here's a quick overview of what we talked about:

  • We're hearing rumblings that there could be movement on the Freedom to Vote Act and the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act early next year, so we need to be prepared to fire up our efforts to support these bills right away.
  • About half of the congressional maps have yet to be adopted, so there is still plenty of work to do organizing communities to advocate for fair districts.
  • Even in states like North Carolina, Ohio, and Texas where maps have been adopted, voters have filed lawsuits to challenge gerrymandered districts, so our fight isn't over!

Simply put, 2022 is going to be a big year in the NDRC's efforts to demand fair maps and defend democracy, so we need to be ready to hit the ground running. President Obama himself said, "The fight isn't over yet." He's absolutely right, which is why we must be prepared to take action.

Given everything on our agenda in 2022, our finance team emphasized that it's REALLY important to hit our $199,000 end-of-year fundraising goal. But the deadline is tomorrow night -- can I count on you to rush a last-minute contribution to help us out?

Thank you!

-- Erika

Friend,

Last week Sen. Raphael Warnock delivered a rousing speech on the Senate floor in which he urged his colleagues to pass critical voting rights legislation, no matter what it takes. He called on the Senate to prioritize our most basic freedom -- the freedom to vote -- and if that requires altering a Senate procedure that has already been altered many times, so be it.

We at the NDRC STRONGLY agree with Sen. Warnock. But we need to know that the American people agree with him, too. Will you add your name before midnight to let the NDRC know that you believe the Senate MUST do whatever it takes to pass the Freedom to Vote Act and the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act?

Goal: 15,000 signatures
Deadline: Midnight

President Obama, A.G. Holder, and Sen. Warnock have said this must be done. Please sign on if you agree.

-- Team NDRC
