Diane -- Today marks exactly one year from when I leave this office and hand the keys over to our next president. That president needs to be a Democrat, Diane. We need our next president to be committed to making our economy work for the middle class and expanding opportunity for working families. We need that person to protect the progress we've made in helping Americans gain the peace of mind that comes with health insurance and reforming our education system to equip our young people with the tools they need to compete in a global economy. And we need that person to build on the historic actions we've taken to combat climate change and curb gun violence to make our communities safer. So every single day from now until November 8th, we need to do everything we can to elect a Democrat. On this day, we hope you will join millions of Americans in all 50 states and rise to the President's challenge to uphold our collective obligation as citizens. In honor of Dr. King's legacy, volunteers will make #MLKDay a day on, instead of a day off, to strengthen communities across the country by collecting food and delivering meals, refurbishing homes and schools, mentoring students, promoting nonviolence, supporting veterans and military families, and much more. The MLK Day of Service has been the anchor of the Obama Administration's commitment to service and civic engagement. In 2009, President Obama celebrated his Presidential Inauguration honoring Dr. King through service building on the legacy of "self-government" and reminding us all that we can lend our voices, use our skills, and give our time to make an impact. So, Diane

A few days ago, Diane, when I delivered my final State of the Union address, I talked about how we can keep making progress -- and how I need you standing with me every step of the way. Even with all that we've accomplished together, like creating 14 million new private-sector jobs and ensuring the freedom of health insurance for more than 17 million Americans, there's still more work to get done -- from raising the minimum wage and ensuring equal pay, to guaranteeing paid sick leave for workers, to taking steps to fix our broken immigration system and protect our children from gun violence. I hope you know that I'm going to do whatever it takes to make 2016 count, Diane -- but the reality is that not all of our goals are going to be accomplished while I hold this office.
