From the CEO

Dear Fellow Volunteer:

Hello! As August draws to a close, fall brings with it many exciting changes. For instance, some of you may be headed back to school, or helping prepare another young person who is.

Here at the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS), the autumn brings with it the second of two congressionally-designated national days of service. Earlier this year, you joined President Obama in pledging to serve as a part of the Martin Luther King, Jr. National Day of Service.

We are asking you to renew that commitment by volunteering in your community for the September 11th National Day of Service and Remembrance

September 11, 2013, marks the 12th anniversary of the worst terrorist attacks ever to occur on U.S. soil. The National Day of Service and Remembrance honors the lives of those who were lost. This day also commemorates the spirit of compassion and generosity that moved many Americans of all backgrounds and faiths to reach out to their neighbors and fellow citizens during the weeks and months that followed.

This year, activities will be occurring around the country the weekend before September 11th and through the weekend following it (9/7-9/15). Visit us at Serve.gov to locate a project near you, or at CNCS' 9/11 Day of Service and Remembrance webpage to find helpful tools and resources for organizing a project in your community.

Need an idea to get started?

Well, September is also National Preparedness Month. In fact, many of the organizations that we partner with to support service for the 9/11 Day of Service and Remembrance engage in community trainings and other activities that help prepare individuals and families for disasters.

I hope that you will join thousands of volunteers around the country in service for the September 11th National Day of Service and Remembrance, and I also hope that you will share your story with us! You can do this by visiting our Facebook page or tweeting about your good work to @ServeDotGov using hashtag #911Day.

Best,
