Make no mistake – fair maps are important for democracy.

Diane -- There is a clear message here from the midterm election. Fairness and democracy won on election night.

How did we get here?
In 2019, President Obama and Attorney General Eric Holder launched All On The Line as a national campaign to restore fairness to our democracy and ensure every American has an equal say in our government.

We made a commitment to protect our democracy using a three-prong strategy:

  • We committed to holding leaders accountable for manipulating maps and pursuing an extreme anti-democratic agenda through our on-the-ground volunteer and advocacy work.
  • We stayed loud consistently, pushing for equitable maps in courts around the country, while in states like North Carolina and Pennsylvania, our affiliates pushed litigation that challenged gerrymandered maps.
  • Most importantly, we dedicated our work to democracy reform and protecting election integrity.

Our strategy paid off and resulted in the fairest congressional map in 40 years.

Our collaborative partnership with Power to the Polls to recruit poll workers for 2022 resulted in nearly 4000 volunteers safeguarding election infrastructure and ensuring voters had the opportunity to exercise their constitutional rights fairly.

How did fairness and democracy win this week?
Despite anti-democracy and map manipulators' best efforts, fair maps and democracy won. We witnessed a historic night in states like Michigan and Colorado, where citizen-commission-drawn maps allowed communities to elect candidates reflective of their unique values and cultures.

On election day, voters in Colorado's 8th congressional district elected the first Latina from Colorado to Congress. Specifically, the newly created competitive 8th Congressional District – a district with the highest percentage of Latinos in the state – was created after calls from the public for the final congressional map to reflect the growth of the Latino community in Colorado. All On The Line Colorado trained hundreds of Coloradans to understand how to participate in the map drawing process and make their voice heard.

Where do we go from here?
We are still fighting for our democracy. In 2023, multiple states will redraw maps, and pending U.S. Supreme Court cases are crucial in moving our country forward. These cases could determine voter rights suppression for generations and affect federal elections. But we've seen what we can accomplish together and will continue to do democracy.

Know this: the success we achieved was because of you.

Everything you did: giving volunteer time, donating to support our resources, or taking action in advocacy for fair maps was valuable and made a difference. We could not have done any of it without you. Because of your support, our movement empowered voters and ensured map manipulators did not hold our nation.

If you're able, we'd appreciate a donation of any amount:

Thank you,
Liz Wester
