the latest news out of Ohio has me thinking about what A.G. Holder said

"We're going to have to go state by state…"

Diane,

Earlier this month, Ohio officially implemented some of the strictest voting restrictions in the country. The new legislation will make it harder to vote by mail and will likely have a disproportionate impact on low-income communities, older voters, and those with disabilities.

And it's not just Ohio. Republicans in states like Arizona, Georgia, and Texas are also working to pass new voting laws ahead of the 2024 election.

These attacks on ballot access are troubling – but they also call to mind what Attorney General Eric Holder said not that long ago:

We're going to have to go state by state to protect voting rights; Chip in

In fact, going state by state has been our strategy since we launched the NDRC in 2017. We knew that organizing in the states was the only way to undo Republicans' awful 2011 gerrymanders and protect ballot access.

Thanks to supporters like you, our work is paying off. For instance, NPR reported that "Michigan Democrats are getting their way for the first time in nearly 40 years." Our movement helped secure fair maps in Michigan, which made it possible for Democrats to win full control of state government. Now, Michigan Democrats are working to expand voting access – and the same is also true in states like Minnesota and Pennsylvania.

This progress is possible because of our fight for fairness, Diane. But as President Obama said recently, "The movement doesn't stop here."

In key states across the country, the battle of redistricting is ongoing, and more than a dozen congressional districts could shift before the next election. Also, election deniers are scrambling to pass new voting restrictions that could limit ballot access in 2024.

That's why the NDRC is committed to continue fighting to strengthen our democracy nationwide. If you're still with us, will you chip in today?

Claire
