Diane, the work of democracy has always been hard. It's always been contentious. For every two steps forward, it often feels like we take one step back. But the long story of America has been defined by a forward motion — a constant widening of our founding creed to embrace all and not just some. Diane, I know that these days — in times of great challenge and uncertainty — it's easy to get discouraged or feel cynical about what's possible. It takes resolve and dedication to remember who we aspire to be. For nearly 250 years, our nation's call to citizenship has given work and purpose to each new generation. It's what led patriots to choose republic over tyranny, pioneers to trek west, enslaved folks to brave that makeshift railroad to freedom. It's what pushed women to fight for the right to vote at the ballot box. It's why GIs gave their lives at Omaha Beach and Iwo Jima — and why men and women from Selma to Stonewall were prepared to give theirs, as well. Citizenship is calling each of us. It's our turn to rise to the moment, to stay true to our values, and to lock arms with those around us who are also intent on moving this country forward. I'm proud to support the NDRC to do this hard, but necessary work of advancing our democracy by fighting for fair representation across our country. As the strategic hub for our work to end gerrymandering, they help make it possible for voters to pick their politicians instead of the other way around — and they count on grassroots support like yours to power this work.
Let's be clear: The threats to the backbone of our democracy are real — those who want to erase decades of progress and take America backward seem to be growing louder by the day. And while I believe in our ability to out-organize and out-hustle them, I know the work ahead won't be easy. Few things worth fighting for ever are. When my friend Eric Holder and I started the NDRC, it was to stand up to partisan and racial gerrymandering, and fight for a better, more representative democracy. In the eight years since this team got off the ground, I've seen them develop and execute a comprehensive strategy to stop map manipulation. They've helped elect pro-democracy candidates to positions that play crucial roles in the redistricting process, and they've helped ensure some of the fairest electoral maps of our lifetimes. But there's still a long way to go. Thank you, Barack Obama
