I'm standing alongside General Motors workers

We have to do more than thank union workers, we must stand with them in the fight.

DemocratsJoin us.

Yesterday, I joined the picket line in my hometown of Buffalo, New York, where 3,000 United Auto Workers are fighting for fair wages, job security, and good health care. Across the nation, nearly 50,000 union auto workers have joined other picket lines. As a Democrat, I am proud to stand with them.

When our union brothers and sisters began their strike on Sunday, they made a tough choice. Strike pay, at $250 a week, can often barely cover the cost of rent. That takes extraordinary courage.

We owe the existence of the middle class to courageous union workers like the ones striking all across our country -- we didn't get weekends, overtime pay, and other benefits by standing on the sidelines.

As President Obama's Secretary of Labor, I fought like hell to defend the rights of union workers, and I'm prouder than ever to stand in solidarity with them as they hold General Motors accountable and fight for the wages, benefits, and dignity they deserve.

When unions succeed, America succeeds. Democrats know that. That's why I'll keep standing alongside workers and their families as they speak up for what is right.

In solidarity,

Tom
