Diane -- Both of these things are true:

1. You have to go back to the Civil War to find an American insurrection worse than the one we saw on January 6.
2. January 6 was just the latest in a long line of attempts by some on the right to hang on to political power.

Over the past decade, we've seen over and over again how Republicans will flout the rules and norms of democracy to maintain power with support from a minority of Americans. We saw it when they manipulated the maps in 2011 and subsequently won control of the U.S. House in 2012 despite garnering millions fewer votes.

We saw it in the dozens of voter suppression bills they passed in the states. We saw it when Mitch McConnell stole a Supreme Court pick from President Obama. And of course, we've seen it throughout the Trump administration.

Voter suppression, gerrymandering, and misinformation are all tools used to suppress democracy and enshrine white supremacy.

So in order to strengthen democracy and dismantle white supremacy, we must push to make our government responsive and accountable to the people again.
