Health care is a human right

Never has there been a more urgent moment to recommit to that simple but powerful idea: That no person in our country should be left without care.

Ten years ago today, President Barack Obama signed the Affordable Care Act into law. The ACA brought our country closer than ever to making good on our promise: That no matter who you are, where you live, or how much money you have, health care is a human right. Under President Obama's leadership, America boldly proclaimed that it doesn't matter whether you have a preexisting condition, what gender you are, how old you are, or if you're living with a disability. Quality health care would be within your reach. As we confront the COVID-19 pandemic, we need to keep doing everything in our power to protect the ACA from Republican attacks. Never has there been a more urgent moment for our country to recommit to that simple but powerful idea: That no person in our country should be left without care. It's no secret that Donald Trump and Republicans have tried to undo our progress at every turn. From challenging it in the courts they've stacked with conservative allies, to their attempts to sabotage the law, to trying time and again to repeal it altogether, Republicans have made it crystal clear that we cannot count on them to protect our care. We have no choice but to elect Democrats at every level in order to defend every working family's fundamental right to quality, affordable health care. I know that, despite the immense challenges that lie ahead, we will once again affirm that America is a nation that believes that health care is a right for all -- not just the wealthy and well-connected. It is with unrelenting optimism that I believe, if we put in the hard work now, together we can elect Democrats from the state house to the White House this year who will defend and expand on that sacred right.
