This is going to be a longer email

Diane,

This is going to be a longer email about strategy, and at the end I'm going to ask you to donate to the NDRC to help us carry out that strategy. If you don't have the time to read a long email right now, I completely understand -- but if you'd still like to pitch in, you can do so at this link.

Where we've been and where we're going

I was proud to be there with A.G. Holder when he launched the NDRC with President Obama's support back in 2017. We knew we had to take action to prevent Republicans from doing in 2021 what they did in 2011: manipulate the maps to lock in legislative majorities so they could obstruct Democrats' agenda in Congress and turn back the clock in the states.

So we got to work, and over the past four years we've helped dozens of Democrats win elections to get a seat at the redistricting table, as well as supported several states in passing redistricting reforms. That work is now paying off.

In Colorado, the Independent Congressional Redistricting Commission we supported recently drafted fair maps which were subsequently approved by the state Supreme Court. In Wisconsin, Tony Evers, the Democratic governor we helped to elect, just vetoed the unfair map Republicans passed. The Democratic governor of Pennsylvania is able to do the same when their maps pass.

Where we are now

But I'll be honest: Despite our successes, we are faced with many challenges. In some states where Republicans control the redistricting process from start to finish, they have flat-out ignored the will of voters and either doubled down on 2011 gerrymanders or created even worse ones. So we've been using every tool in our toolbox, including public pressure, media campaigns, and supporting voters in lawsuits to defend fair maps.

Look, we expected Republicans to be brazen. But we didn't expect them to be quite THIS brazen. We didn't expect the Ohio GOP, for example, to try to give themselves control over 80% of the state's congressional districts through gerrymandering. It turns out we need more resources to be able to fight against tactics like these in every corner of the country -- which is why I'm asking if you can chip in today.

You've almost reached the end of the email, Diane! I want to thank you for reading, and especially for all your support over the years. We wouldn't have gotten to this point without people like you -- you are truly the lifeblood of this effort to maintain and restore fairness in our elections.

If you can, please consider chipping in today to help us keep fighting.

With gratitude,
Kelly Burton
President
