Birthday parties for President Obama

Organizing for America
Robert Bruce --

President Obama turns 49 next week, and OFA supporters across the country are sharing in the fun.

Volunteers on the ground are holding birthday parties -- and we'll use the occasion to recruit new folks to join this grassroots movement that has helped President Obama so much throughout his first year and a half in office.

Want to come?

Here's what we're doing in Newport News:

What: President's birthday event

Where: 366 DeShazor Dr
Newport News, VA 23608

When: Wednesday, August 4th
6:30 pm

Can you make it?

Yes, count me in.

No, but I'd like to sign a birthday card for the President.

No, but I want to see if there are other events near me.

No experience is necessary, and talking to potential volunteers is a fun way to spend some time.

Each volunteer we recruit will help get more first-time 2008 voters back to the polls in November -- the centerpiece of our Vote 2010 plan. And with so much more on our agenda, and tight races from Florida to Alaska, we don't have a moment to lose.

RSVP for the President's birthday event in Newport News:

Thanks,

Jeremy

Should we add your name to the President's card?

Friend --

In just one day, nearly a million Organizing for America supporters signed the First Lady's birthday card for President Obama.

Should we add your name before we deliver it to the President?

Thanks,

Mitch

Friend --

Every year, our family tries to come up with a fun way to wish Barack a happy birthday.

And this August 4th, when he turns 49, I have something new in mind.

This has been a big -- and hectic -- year for him. After signing the Affordable Care Act and Wall Street reform into law -- and completing his first year as president -- I think it's safe to say we will remember it for a long time.

And I know full well how much he credits this movement, and the work of supporters like you, for the change that we've accomplished.

So I'm putting together a birthday card that I would like you to sign. Together with other Organizing for America supporters -- and me, Malia, Sasha, and Bo -- we'll wish him a happy birthday and let him know that we're ready to take on the year ahead alongside him.

Will you wish Barack a happy birthday with me?

Wish Barack a happy birthday

This year also brought a lot of surprises -- some good and some bad.

Supporters like you have helped him make the best of it -- by contacting Congress to help push stalled legislation forward, by re-engaging supporters in the political process, by giving back with service projects across the country, and so much more.

And while we can't know what the coming year will bring, all of us, working together, will continue pushing forward for change.

Will you help make this a memorable birthday for Barack and wish him a happy 49th?

Just 2 more supporters in Yorktown

Robert Bruce --

We are just 101 days away from the November election.

You saw in the President's note below just how determined Republicans and their special-interest allies are to undo what we've accomplished together. Organizing for America is already fighting back with an aggressive campaign plan to make sure they don't get the chance.

But we still need 2 donations from Yorktown today to ensure our organizers -- in communities across the country -- get the resources they need to show voters how we've been fighting for them.

Please donate $5 today to help us fund our campaign:

Thanks,

Mitch

Friend --

When you and I set out on this journey three years ago, we knew that ours would be a lengthy struggle to build a new foundation for this country -- one that would require squaring off against the special interests who had spent decades stacking the deck in their favor.

Today, it is clear that you have shifted the odds.

This morning, I signed into law a bill that represents the most sweeping reforms of Wall Street since the Great Depression, and the toughest consumer financial protections this nation has ever seen. I know that I am able to do so only because the tens of thousands of volunteers who make up the backbone of this movement overcame the most potent attack ads and the most powerful lobbying the special interests could put forward.

Our special-interest opponents and their Republican allies have now set their sights on the elections in November as their best chance to overturn the historic progress we've made together.

Organizing for America counts entirely on supporters like you to fight back -- no special interests, no corporate PACs. To keep making change and to defend the change we have already won, we need you -- and at least 2 other people in Yorktown -- to contribute so we have the resources necessary going into the election.

Please donate $5 today and help Organizing for America lay the groundwork for the fights ahead.

Because of Wall Street reform, we will ensure that Americans applying for a credit card, a mortgage, or a student loan will never again be asked to sign their name under pages of confusing fine print. We will crack down on abusive lending practices and make sure that lenders don't cheat the system -- and create a new watchdog to enforce these consumer protections.

And we will put an end to taxpayer-funded bailouts, giving us the ability to wind down any large financial institution if it should ever fail.

The passage of Wall Street reform is at the forefront of the change we seek, and it will provide a foundation for a stronger and safer economy.

It is a foundation built upon the progress of the Recovery Act, which has turned 22 months of job losses into six consecutive months of private-sector job growth. And it is a foundation reinforced by the historic health reform we passed this spring, which is already giving new benefits to more than 100 million Americans, ushering another 1 million Americans into coverage by next year.

But today's victory is not where our fight ends.

Organizing for America and I will move forward in the months ahead on the tough fights we have yet to finish -- even if cynics say we should wait until after the fall elections. This movement has never catered to the conventional wisdom of Washington. And we have fought to ensure that our progress is never held hostage by our politics.

You and I did not build this movement to win one election. We did not come together to pass one single piece of legislation. We are fighting for nothing less than a new foundation for our country -- and that work is not complete. As we face the challenges ahead, I am relying on you to stand with me.

Please donate $5 or more today:

Wrong-headed

Organizing for America
Robert Bruce --

We're about to see benefits for the jobless expire in a period of high unemployment -- for the first time in 50 years. And Republicans are the only ones to blame.

It isn't just wrong -- it's wrong-headed.

Conservatives in the Senate have been at this for weeks -- abusing the rules to block Democrats from passing legislation. Their filibuster means millions of people lose their unemployment checks, and the entire economy suffers because of it.

All the polling suggests that the American people overwhelmingly support extending benefits and doing it now. But the conservatives aren't getting the message. So I've written a letter that calls for them to stop their obstruction and let the Senate vote on benefits for the jobless -- will you sign with me?

If thousands of us stand together and issue the same call, we'll focus attention on this issue -- in D.C. and across the country. Reporters will take notice, and more voters will rightly point to the GOP as the cause for this nightmare. In other words, we'll send a message that can't be ignored.

And movement on these benefits can't come a moment too soon. Almost half of our jobless have been out of work for more than 26 weeks -- that's the highest level we've seen for long-term unemployment since the Great Depression. And because of the Republicans, about 33 people lose their benefits every minute.

Just about every expert will tell you the same thing: Unemployment benefits help the entire economy. In order to collect benefits, you have to demonstrate that you have been looking for work. While you look, they keep bills paid, put fuel in the car, and ensure that families don't suffer when there aren't enough jobs to go around -- things that keep the economy from shrinking even more. And at a time when there are five unemployed workers for every job opening, that's something we just can't afford.

So let's all stand together to send a very loud and pointed message to Republicans. Sign this open letter and help us create the kind of national outcry it will take to shame the GOP into letting us vote on unemployment benefits:

Prevention

Robert Bruce --

When you hear about the new health reform law these days, too much talk is focused on the political.

What I've found is that most Americans just want to know how this new law helps their families stay healthy -- and how it reduces their costs.

The first thing I tell people who ask about the Affordable Care Act is that, for moms like me, it makes our lives easier. It gives families control over their own care. And it gives us the comfort of knowing that our insurance will be there when we need it most -- especially if we get sick. Then I tell them that it gets better, but there's a lot to know. To help, this administration has set up HealthCare.gov, where folks can see customized information about how care will improve for their families.

So much of what makes this law great is its emphasis on preventive care -- right now, too many people aren't getting the check-ups or the screenings they need to stay healthy. Twelve percent of kids haven't seen a doctor in the past year. And 59 million adults -- and 11 million children -- depend on an insurance plan that does not cover basic immunizations.

Health reform is changing that. Under this new law, all new private plans will provide basic preventive services -- things like childhood immunizations and checkups, mammograms, colonoscopies, cervical screenings, and treatment for high blood pressure -- absolutely free of charge. No copay. No deductible. No co-insurance needed.

And, on HealthCare.gov, you can not only learn what preventive steps will help keep your family healthy, but also what insurance coverage options are available based on your needs.

A focus on prevention will help us to combat diabetes, heart disease, and high blood pressure -- chronic illnesses that right now lead to seven of ten deaths in the United States and 75 percent of our national health care costs.

And it will help us tackle an issue that is dear to my heart -- childhood obesity. As some of you know one of my top priorities as First Lady is the Let's Move! campaign, where we have made it our goal to put a stop to the challenge of childhood obesity within a generation, so children who are born today grow up at a healthy weight.

Each of us needs to take responsibility for our own health and the health of our families, and the new health reform law can help. That's why I'm writing today -- to make sure you and Americans across the country know how their health plans are getting better day by day under reform.

Please visit HealthCare.gov and find out more about your care:

www.healthcare.gov

Michelle Obama

Robert Bruce, we won

Organizing for America
Robert Bruce --

The Senate just passed Wall Street reform. The bill will become law the moment President Obama signs it.

This reform represents the boldest financial regulations since the aftermath of the Great Depression -- and the strongest consumer protections in history.

Every door you knocked in Iowa, every phone call you made in Ohio, every dollar you dug deep to give -- it's all for this. The Recovery Act, health reform, and now Wall Street reform, on top of everything else. In a year and a half, this administration has made bigger, bolder progress than any president's in decades.

We have a president who fights for all of us, every day. We have you, the best organizers this country has ever seen, who flooded Congress with calls and letters, had millions of conversations with friends and neighbors, went toe-to-toe with the country's most powerful special interests -- and won.

And we have members of Congress who bravely stood with the President, even as right-wing groups have pledged $200 million to defeat them in November's elections.

First, take a moment to celebrate. This is an achievement that will make American lives better and protect our economy for generations to come, and it absolutely wouldn't have happened without you.

Then, take a moment to thank the members of Congress who stood with us and supported these landmark reforms. In the coming days, they'll be taking a lot of heat for defying Wall Street -- and they need to know they have our gratitude.

Organizing for America supporters are signing a note of thanks to Nancy Pelosi, Harry Reid, and all of the allies in Congress who stood up for reform.

Will you add your name?

http://my.barackobama.com/WSRVictory

We'll deliver these signatures to leaders in Congress who supported reform, after the President signs this into law.

Thanks for all you did to get us here. I'm so grateful to be making history with you, and I know the President is as well.

Fight back in Hampton

Organizing for America
Robert Bruce --

There have been some stark reminders this week of exactly what's at stake in the coming elections.

It's not just that everything this movement has accomplished -- from health reform to the Wall Street reform that we're about to pass -- would be in jeopardy.

It's who would be in charge if Republicans and their extremist allies prevail.

Sharron Angle -- the GOP Senate nominee in Nevada -- said that the work of a Democratic Congress might require "Second Amendment remedies." Rep. Michele Bachmann said that President Obama is turning America into "a nation of slaves."

And a group in Iowa proudly unveiled a billboard featuring the President's image next to Adolf Hitler and Vladimir Lenin.

It all shows that we don't have a moment to lose as we organize our communities to get out and vote, to fight back against these extremists -- and why your time and energy is so crucial to the success of this movement.

There's a Vote 2010 event in Hampton this Saturday -- can you join us?

Here are the details:

What: Vote 2010 Day of Action event

Where: Hampton Public Library
4207 Victoria Blvd
Hampton, VA 23669

When: Saturday, July 17th
10:00 AM

Fight back: RSVP today

Can't make that event? See if there's another one you can make it to.

Our formula to win against this hateful -- and, frankly, disturbing -- opposition is simple: register new voters, and get as many first-time voters from 2008 as possible back to the polls.

If it sounds familiar, it's because Barack Obama followed a very similar path to victory in 2008 -- registering new voters and getting millions of folks to the polls for the first time.

But it can only work if committed folks like you start working now -- knocking on the doors, making the phone calls, and registering the voters who will lead us to victory in November.

Please RSVP to join us in Hampton:

http://my.barackobama.com/JulyRSVP

Thanks for all you do. Together, we'll defeat these people.

Robert Bruce, the Senate needs to hear from you

Organizing for America
Robert Bruce --

Virginia's senators are gearing up to cast their last votes on Wall Street reform tomorrow. Right now, we believe we might have just enough votes to pass this historic legislation.

But we won't know until the final vote is cast -- and we're only certain of one thing: it could come down to one single senator.

That's how close this is -- and that's how urgently we need your help.

Your senators, Jim Webb and Mark Warner, have been fighting alongside President Obama to pass this bill -- and they need to know you appreciate their leadership.

Call your senators now and let them know you support Wall Street reform -- and then make sure to let us know what they said.

Call Sen. Webb at (202) 224-4024
Call Sen. Warner at (202) 224-2023

One last vote on Wall Street reform. Call the Senate.

We're on the verge of passing the boldest overhaul of the financial system since the Great Depression.

Wall Street reform will bring more economic security to consumers by forcing credit card companies, mortgage companies, and predatory lenders to stop exploiting consumers with hidden fees and pages of fine print.

It will create a new Consumer Financial Protection Agency -- with a responsibility to protect all of us. And it will ensure that taxpayers will never again be asked to bail out the big banks that are "too big to fail."

Reform is facing one last showdown in the Senate. Lobbyists for the big banks are doing everything they can to stop this legislation before it lands on President Obama's desk.

Let's help pass reform -- and show once again that the movement we built can go up against the most powerful special interests in Washington and win.

Call your senators now:

Janine R. Wedel: Shadow Elite: Has the Obama Organizing Machine Staged A Party Takeover?
Someone on Huffington Post gets a clue?

We need you in Hampton

Organizing for America
Robert Bruce --

The weekend of July 17th, OFA and local volunteers are teaming together to connect with voters in Hampton as part of our Vote 2010 Day of Action, and I hope you can make it.

From city streets and rural farms to suburban parks and local strip malls, we're doing everything possible to get folks to commit to vote in November's elections.

This commitment is as important as it is simple and could tip the balance in races across the country that could be close.

Will you join our national Vote 2010 Day of Action in Hampton the weekend of July 17th?

Here are the details:

What: Vote 2010 Day of Action event

Where: Hampton Public Library

When: Saturday, July 17th
10:00 AM

Join our Vote 2010 Day of Action

Can't make that event? Click here to find other events near you.

In 2008, millions of new voters registered and turned out to cast their ballots in the November election -- that was a key part of the President's victory. A crucial aspect of our Vote 2010 program this year is similarly designed to register new voters and get those who cast votes for the first time in 2008 back to the polls this fall.

This is a big challenge, but we have too much on the line to come up short. Republicans have made overturning these reforms the centerpiece of their campaigns across the country -- now it's our job to stand up for President Obama's allies and to make sure his opponents don't succeed.

I hope you'll help make our Vote 2010 Day of Action as big as possible -- please RSVP to join us in Hampton:

This Fourth of July

Robert Bruce --

The Fourth of July is especially dear to my family. For us, it is not just our nation's birthday. It is the day Michelle and I became parents 12 years ago. And every year we enjoy watching the fireworks with Malia on her birthday.

As we celebrate the profound pride of being American, today is a time to honor the women and men in our armed forces, whose immeasurable bravery and sacrifice have made our country what it is today.

That sacrifice is shared with husbands and wives, with sons and daughters, with fathers and mothers, who are asked to wait at home as their loved ones protect our nation. Their heroism, too, has helped pave the path of our freedom.

Even before we moved into the White House, Michelle was a champion for those military families. She has witnessed their struggles, and she has made it her personal mission to fight for them. On this Fourth of July, she recorded a personal message, commemorating our nation's birthday and paying tribute to these families.

Watch Michelle's message.

Please take a minute to watch Michelle's video -- and join us as we honor our military families here and abroad:

http://my.barackobama.com/July4th

From all of us, happy Independence Day.

Thank you, and may God bless America.

On to the Senate

Organizing for America
Robert Bruce --

Last night, just before 7 p.m. Eastern Time, the House passed Wall Street reform by a vote of 237 to 192. This is a huge victory for our movement -- and all American consumers.

Now, there's just one hurdle left before this historic bill can be signed into law. It must be passed by the Senate -- a vote likely to come right after the July 4th congressional recess.

Protecting consumers and holding the big banks accountable is a key piece of the change that all of us fought for in 2008. It's up to us to bring it across the finish line -- making sure every champion in the Senate knows that we're standing with them, and that those in opposition know that Americans are demanding reform.

Can you take a moment now to write to your senators?
