Commit to volunteer

2012
Friend --

A little more than one year from now, we'll all be doing one of two things.

We'll be celebrating the President's re-election, and our renewed opportunity to keep moving this country forward. Or we'll be wondering whether we could have done more -- reached out and talked to more people, helped register more voters -- when we still had time.

I plan on waking up on the morning of November 7th, 2012, knowing that President Obama was re-elected and I did everything I could to make sure of it. We have a lot of ground to cover between now and Election Day -- and we can't wait until next year to get started. That's why this week -- one year out -- we're ramping up the volunteer push that's going to get this president re-elected.

Today, say you're ready to be a part of it -- whether that means you make phone calls next week, go canvassing early next year, or take on a leadership role in your neighborhood team in the months to come.

Commit to volunteer for 2012 today.

Thousands of supporters are already at work on the ground, talking to their neighbors, pitching in however they can. But none of us can sit back on the sidelines and hope that work alone will be enough. It won't.

There isn't going to be another November between now and the election: The twelve months we have left are all we're going to get. Right now, we all have the time, and the opportunity, to step up and make a commitment to be a part of the work that we know will be the difference between winning and losing next fall.

The reality we'll all face when the dust settles after the 2012 elections is something we can affect with the actions we decide to take today.

It's time: Say you'll help shape the outcome of 2012 by committing to volunteer:

This Saturday: Mobilize voters in Newport News

2012
Friend --

We have less than two weeks until November's local and state elections. That means we need to ramp up our work to organize our communities, block by block and neighborhood by neighborhood.

These elections are critical to making progress locally, and the momentum we build now will also help us make progress nationally -- on creating jobs, getting the middle class back on its feet, and more.

What we're setting out to do is ambitious, but we can do it if we keep working to inspire others to stand up and help shape their communities and our country. And that all plays out in the voting booth.

That's why you should help get out the vote this Saturday. Volunteers will be making calls, knocking on doors, and reaching out to people locally to make sure they get to the polls.

There's an event in Newport News -- can you make it?

What: Get out the vote in Newport News

Where: 14375 Warwick Boulevard
Newport News, VA 23602

When: Saturday, October 29th
12:00 pm

RSVP now

Getting out the vote is one of the most important things we do in this campaign. We've always grown this movement by inspiring people to get more engaged -- both in their communities and in the democratic process as a whole.

Volunteering is easy and fun -- and when you show up for your shift, someone will be on hand to show you the ropes.

Neighborhood teams are mobilizing over the next few weeks, so this is a great time to get involved.

I hope you can show up at the event in Newport News this Saturday -- and bring a friend or two with you:

Student loans can't wait

2012
Friend --

President Obama just took two serious steps to make life a lot easier for folks with student loans -- and there's a good chance you or someone you know will benefit from these changes very soon.

Here's how:

-- Effective this January, if you're someone who has different kinds of loans -- guaranteed and direct -- you'll be able to roll them both into one direct loan and bring down your interest rate. You'll only have to write one check a month, and you'll see a discount. This switch adds no cost to taxpayers across the board.

-- You might remember that, as part of last year's student loan reform, borrowers' loan payments could be no higher than 10 percent of their disposable income. This is a big deal -- but it wasn't going to help anyone enrolling before 2014. Today, the President announced that he's speeding up this program so it will affect students next year -- helping over 1 million students. This will have huge consequences for people struggling to make their student loan payments.

Sometimes, it can be hard to see how policy changes will actually affect your day-to-day life.

Not the case with this one. These changes will make a real difference in helping millions of Americans get by month to month.

We put together a video explaining how these changes will help Americans. Watch it to learn a little more about what today's steps would do, and then make sure everyone you know who should hear about it does.

Learn how student loan reforms help you.

President Obama isn't waiting on Congress to take action. He's doing everything in his power, right now, to help bolster our economy and get folks back on their feet.

On Monday, he laid out new rules on federal mortgages to help make sure more families don't lose their homes to foreclosure.

On Tuesday, the administration announced two new initiatives to help veterans find work.

Today, it means making changes that make student loans a lot easier to manage.

These are actions that can't wait on the next vote or the next election. So long as people are struggling, this President and this administration will do everything in their power to help them when and where they can. It's just that simple.

Now, let's make sure that the millions of people who stand to benefit from today's steps know about it.

Watch the video to learn more about today's student loan changes -- and then help get the word out:

We can't wait

2012
Friend --

Now that each and every Senate Republican has vowed to block measures that would create jobs, President Obama is not going to wait for them to rebuild the economy and bring financial security back to the middle class.

Today, he announced new rules on federal mortgages to prevent more families from losing their homes to foreclosure. And that's just the beginning -- the President said he would continue to make the changes he can by executive action, while continuing to urge Congress to act on legislation to strengthen the economy and create jobs.

If Congress doesn't act, he will -- because millions of Americans can't just wait for Congress to do their jobs. That's why thousands of you have been calling and tweeting your representatives over the past month, joining the President in sending a message to lawmakers in Washington that they need to act now.

We're not just going to continue to wait -- and we'll be keeping up the pressure by making sure they're hearing from folks across the country every day about why they need to act.

Will you share your story -- and join President Obama in telling Congress that we can't and won't wait?

Republicans in Congress have repeatedly filibustered the President's ideas to create jobs now -- ideas that until recently were supported by Republicans.

The President's action today also stands in stark contrast to the positions of the Republicans running for president. Mitt Romney even told a newspaper last week that we actually shouldn't act; we should let the housing crisis "run its course" and "hit the bottom" so that "investors" can come in and buy up these homes at cheap prices. He's saying to homeowners that they are on their own, forcing thousands of families to explain to their kids why they have to give up their homes.

Doing nothing while families struggle: that's the opposite of what this president and this campaign stand for. President Obama isn't going to let Congress' inaction stop him from doing what he can right now.

So here's what the President's announcement means:

-- More families whose homes are under water will get help and save money on their monthly mortgage payment through the Home Affordable Refinance Programs.

-- If the value of your mortgage is $100,000 and your house is valued at $75,000, you previously weren't able to refinance to save your home -- forcing many families to pay higher interest rates. As a result of today's announcement, many more responsible homeowners will be able to lower their rates and pay their debts.

-- And this is just one of the incremental changes to come. Next, the President will announce new steps to help young people manage their federal student loan debt while they look for a job and get on their feet. He'll also take action to help small businesses and entrepreneurs, spur the engines of job growth, create new jobs, and assist veterans in finding them.

These measures alone are not a comprehensive solution to the economic challenges we face. That needs to come out of Congress -- and if they're going to finally put party aside, they're going to need to keep hearing from us. President Obama is stepping up the pressure, and he's counting on us to keep going, too.

Get the President's back and keep the heat on Congress -- tell your story of why we can't wait any longer:

The end of the war in Iraq

2012
Friend --

I'm James Kvaal, the new policy director for President Obama's 2012 campaign. You'll be hearing from me occasionally about the President's policies and those of our opponents, and how we can all help bring about change for our country.

Yesterday, we accomplished one major change when President Obama announced that all American troops in Iraq will be home before the holidays.

With that action, the Iraq war will end. And one of the President's central promises will have been kept.

Both as Americans and as supporters of President Obama, this is something for us to reflect on, and be proud of.

Watch the video of the President's announcement -- then please pass this on:

The war in Iraq was a divisive, defining issue in our country for nearly nine years, and was the catalyst for many Americans to get involved in politics for the first time.

Now, thanks to the actions of this President, we can say that conflict is coming to a close.

The end of this war reflects a larger transition in our foreign policy as, in the President's words, "the tide of war is receding." The drawdown in Iraq has allowed us to refocus on the fight against al Qaeda, even as we begin to bring troops home from Afghanistan. And of course, this week also marked the definitive end of the Qaddafi regime in Libya.

These outcomes are an example of what happens when a leader sets a plan and sees it through. In the last campaign, the President committed to getting American troops home while leaving behind a stable and secure Iraq. You rallied around that vision, and now that promise has been fulfilled.

On behalf of this campaign and supporters of the President across the country, I want to thank the more than 1 million Americans who have served in Iraq, and all those who worked to make this possible.

Thanks,

James

It doesn't need to be this way

2012
Friend --

Last night, Democrats in the Senate tried to pass a simple piece of President Obama's jobs plan that shouldn't be controversial: provide money to prevent further layoffs of teachers, cops, and firefighters at the local level, and pay for it by taxing the income of millionaires an extra 0.5%.

This morning a lot of media outlets reported that the Senate "rejected" or "voted down" this proposal.

But that's not what happened. The measure didn't come to an actual vote.

That's because every single Republican senator filibustered the bill -- meaning they wouldn't even let an up-or-down vote happen. Republicans have unilaterally decided not to allow even that simple majority vote on anything that might help the economy before the next election.

To be clear: This bill would have created jobs, and both parties have supported similar measures in the past.

But, sadly, some in the Congress do not feel any responsibility to act. As someone who has spent a lot of time working in and with the Senate, I can tell you that it's a particularly low moment for the legislative branch of our government.

It doesn't need to be this way. That's why the President and our campaign are focused on fixing what's broken in Washington. Right now, that means we're going to keep the pressure on Congress to act, until every single piece of the President's jobs plan -- the parts to help veterans find jobs and get small businesses hiring more people -- gets a vote.

So please, reach out and keep reaching out to Senator Mitch McConnell, the Republican leader in the Senate, and ask him to give each piece of the American Jobs Act a fair vote.

You can reach his office at (202) 224-2541.

Call now -- then let us know how it went.

If you're on Twitter, be sure to tweet at your Republicans in Congress as well.

We'll have more on this soon.

Money where their mouth is

2012
Friend --

If you've been able to sit through any of the Republican presidential debates so far, I commend you for your patience and commitment to the President.

With all the talk about "class warfare," "Obamacare," "9-9-9," and how Social Security is a "Ponzi scheme," the Republican candidates have tended to leave very little time to discuss constructive solutions to the actual challenges facing our country.

Well, there's another Republican debate tonight in Las Vegas. And if we can't convince the candidates to talk about jobs or how to provide economic security for the middle class, we can hold them accountable for what they choose to talk about instead.

The campaign has put together a debate watch game to make sure there's a real cost to all the attacks and nonsense. Here's how it works: You pick a word or phrase from the list below to sponsor, and pledge to give $3 or $5 (or however much you'd like) for each mention. So tonight, as the Republican candidates prattle on about defunding Social Security, ending Medicare as we know it, and everything else they support, they will literally be building this campaign.

Check it out, and get your guesses in now before the debate starts at 8:00 p.m. Eastern Time.

Don't worry, you can set a cap on how much you want to give, in case someone (not saying who) says "9-9-9" two dozen times.

    -- Class warfare
    -- Repeal
    -- Obamacare
    -- Fence
    -- (De)regulation
    -- Amnesty
    -- Socialism
    -- Romneycare
    -- 9-9-9

We have to assume that the Republicans in this race are sincere about wanting to be President. But when so much of the discussion is about rolling back protections put in place by the Affordable Care Act and Wall Street reform, and instituting a tax plan that would mean middle-class families pay thousands more every year, we can question how sincere they are about helping to solve the very real problems millions of people confront every day.

Americans deserve a leader who takes the job seriously.

So I'm looking forward to seeing what you think they'll say this time. We should have some fun with this -- it's Vegas, after all.

But we're not just doing this for our own entertainment. We're building a campaign that can withstand a barrage of special-interest funded attacks from the other side, and make sure President Obama can continue the important work we have left to do.

Any donation you end up making tonight will be put to work right away to that end.

So what do you think? Class warfare? Socialism?

Make your best guesses here:

1 million

Friend --

Our campaign is about to hit 1 million grassroots donors.

I wanted to write to you because this is something that only happens once.

No matter what our opponents do, and however many people end up becoming a part of this campaign -- this first million will always be the group that put this movement in the best position possible for the fights ahead.

Today, I'm asking you to make a donation and be one of them.

When you give, you're not just becoming one of the first million to help fund this campaign -- you're representing millions more across the country who are counting on us.

None of us can do this alone. We've always relied on each other, not Washington lobbyists or corporate interests, to build our campaign. So today, another supporter who's already among the first million has promised to match whatever you can give. I hope you'll take them up on it:

Very soon

2012
Friend --

I have this counter page pulled up on my laptop, and I can't step away. Right now, we're at 993,286 grassroots donors -- and we're going hit a million very soon if folks like you keep chipping in.

So if you haven't given yet and still want to, now's the time. Another supporter has promised to match dollar for dollar whatever you can give today:

Make a donation and be part of the first million to build this campaign.

Donate now -- and be part of the first million

A million donors at this point is a pretty extraordinary achievement. Last campaign, it took more than a year to get to this milestone.

Think back to that -- at the time we hit 1 million in 2008, we'd already had 23 debates. It was after the Iowa caucuses, after the New Hampshire primary, after the more than 20 states that had primaries on Super Tuesday. Now we're going to hit that number just over six months in -- and three months before Iowa even caucuses.

It's a real testament to the power of what people can do when they build a movement the old-fashioned way, person by person, with everyone chipping in what they can, when they can.

And it's going to have some big implications for the next year as we keep building the infrastructure that will help us win. There's a lot more work to be done, but this puts us in the strongest possible position.

Chip in today -- then watch the counter as we hit 1 million together:

They got it wrong

2012
Friend --

Just six days before the last fundraising deadline, one major newspaper ran a story under the headline "Small donors are slow to return to the Obama fold."

You and a whole lot of other supporters turned that headline upside down. Today we filed a report with the FEC that shows this movement isn't just as strong as ever -- it's growing.

Sometimes the media gets so caught up in its own echo chamber that the storyline separates from the facts.

The great thing about building a grassroots organization based outside of Washington is that the press won't decide what happens here -- you will.

In fact, right now, just shy of 1 million people like you have taken ownership of this campaign by pitching in whatever they can afford.

You can help us all get to that milestone today.

A grassroots supporter has made a pledge to match whatever you're able to give right now. If you're able to pitch in, you'll be able to see who that person is, and where they're from. They may have even left a note for you about why they wanted you to join them as one of the first million donors of this campaign.

Donate today and own a piece of this movement.

No matter what happens in the inside-the-beltway media circus, or what the pundits are predicting, we've got to stay focused on building this campaign from the ground up, one grassroots donation at a time.

When each of us takes responsibility as a supporter, the combined impact sends a stronger message than any single newspaper story.

You can do that right now.

Become one of the first million people giving, and your donation will be matched -- doubling your impact:

982,967

2012
Friend --

Remember that deadline we kept emailing you about a couple weeks ago?

Here's what you should know about what we'll report to the FEC tomorrow:

-- In the third fundraising quarter of this year, 606,027 people donated to this campaign -- even more than gave in the record-breaking previous quarter.
-- Those people gave more than 766,000 total donations -- 98 percent of them $250 or less, at an average amount of $56. That's more than twice as many donations than we had at this point in the historic 2008 campaign.
-- We are focused on building infrastructure that will help us win in 2012. And each quarter we set a combined goal for the campaign and our allies at the Democratic National Committee. We far exceeded our goal of $55 million this quarter between the two organizations.
-- Together, Obama for America and the DNC raised more than $70 million. And it all happened during a summer when the President was focused on doing the job he was elected to do -- a summer when we had to cancel a series of fundraising events and ask everyone to dig a little deeper.

If I could sum up this last quarter in a few words: Supporters like you came through.

Here's even bigger news: Right now, 982,967 people have donated to this campaign. We're within striking distance of 1 million donors.

It's not too late for you to be part of that first million. And get this -- someone who has already given to the campaign is willing to give again, matching whatever donation you make today.

Double your impact and be part of the first million people to own this campaign -- make a donation now.

Part of the reason we send you all these emails is that we don't accept any money from special-interest groups or Washington lobbyists.

So getting to a million grassroots donors isn't just a huge accomplishment this early in the campaign. It's our answer to our opponents, the press, and anyone who wants to know whether the President's supporters have his back.

The reality is that on top of the hundreds of thousands of supporters from 2008 who decided to make another donation, 257,635 people made their first donation ever to the Obama organization -- continuing the record pace we set in the previous quarter.

That support translates directly to what we can do on the ground. In the past three months we've grown our organizing staff by 50 percent, and opened up three new field offices every week. Thousands of volunteers and organizers made 3 million phone calls and in-person visits to voters.

That's all because nearly 1 million people decided to take ownership.

And the continued pace of that growth is up to you -- we will open more offices, train more organizers, and knock on more doors at the pace you make possible.

When Republicans think it helps their political fortunes to block the progress that the President is advocating for, we have to speak up and mobilize.

You know why it's important to engage right now. We're up against a Republican Party and special interest-funded groups that will spend hundreds of millions of dollars spreading any message that they believe will defeat the President and roll back our efforts to build a fairer economy that rewards hard work and responsibility, not large corporations.

But we've also got to build for the long term. That's what all the fundraising and deadlines are about: building the organization now that will put us in a position to win in 2012.

Thanks for all you did to get us here. I'm excited for what's ahead, and I hope you'll take part in the push to 1 million grassroots donors today.

Match someone's pledge, double your impact, and become part of the first million today:

President Obama: "I will not take no for an answer"

2012
Friend --

Last night, the American Jobs Act was filibustered by Senate Republicans. There was no vote on the actual bill.

But it would have succeeded: the American Jobs Act has at least 51 votes -- a clear majority -- to pass the Senate. And a new poll shows that 63 percent of Americans support it, too.

Today the President recorded a message he wants you to see, laying out where we go from here in the fight for jobs.

Watch President Obama's video -- and pass it on to anyone you think should see it.

President Obama on jobs

The Republicans who voted yesterday to block this bill weren't thinking about middle-class families. In fact, at last night's GOP debate, one of their leading candidates actually refused to say he'd extend a payroll tax cut that puts more than $1,000 in the pockets of everyday working Americans.

They might believe it's in their political interest to oppose whatever the President proposes for the next 13 months, but we know that when it comes to jobs and restoring economic security, Americans can't afford to wait.

The American Jobs Act would get to work now, providing incentives for businesses to hire unemployed veterans, helping hire tens of thousands of teachers, cops, and firefighters, and rebuilding and modernizing our schools, railways, bridges, and airports. Even though it's fully paid for and made up of proposals both parties have supported, Republicans yesterday said no.

Now the President wants you to hear directly from him about what's next.

Watch the video -- and make sure your friends do, too:

Each senator has a choice

2012
Friend --

The U.S. Senate is supposed to vote on the American Jobs Act as early as tonight.

It's a bill that will put people to work immediately, and it contains proposals that members of both parties have said in the past that they'd support.

But Senate Republicans want to block it. Not because they have a plan that creates jobs right now -- not one Republican, in Congress or in the presidential race, does. They only have a political plan.

Their strategy is to suffocate the economy for the sake of what they think will be a political victory. They think that the more folks see Washington taking no action to create jobs, the better their chances in the next election. So they're doing everything in their power to make sure nothing gets done.

There's still time for principled Republican senators to declare their independence from this kamikaze political strategy.

Senator Mitch McConnell, the Republican leader in the Senate, needs to hear what Americans like you think.

You can reach his office at (202) 224-2541. Tell him not to let politics get in the way of creating jobs.

Will you take three minutes and call now? Then click here to let us know how it went.

If Sen. McConnell's office says he won't support the American Jobs Act, ask which parts he doesn't support:

-- Making sure that those who served our country can get good jobs at home by providing incentives for businesses to hire unemployed veterans?
-- Preventing layoffs of teachers, cops, and firefighters, while supporting the hiring of tens of thousands more?
-- Rebuilding our crumbling roads, bridges, railways, and airports with a bipartisan, public-private infrastructure bank?
-- Modernizing at least 35,000 public schools in rural and urban areas?
-- Providing job training for the unemployed, especially young people who have been hit especially hard?

The President has been forceful and clear: Action on jobs is desperately needed, and Congress should pass this bill right away.

And he has specifically asked those of us who agree to make sure Republican lawmakers know it.

This bill -- and the simple idea that every American who works hard and plays by the rules has a fundamental right to economic security -- is a big part of what we stand for as a campaign and as a movement.

There's no good reason for Congress to delay any more -- and if they do, you deserve to know why.

Call Sen. McConnell's office. Tell him you're watching, and you expect Republicans in the Senate to do the right thing and move forward on this bill today.

Then let us know how it went:

Getting to Charlotte

2012
Friend --

Fast forward 331 days.

We're now just 64 days out from the 2012 election, the country is buzzing, and tens of thousands of supporters like you are gathering in Charlotte, North Carolina, to nominate Barack Obama for President.

The 2012 Convention will be unlike any before it -- and I'm not just saying that because I happen to call North Carolina home.

The campaign wants it to be an event not just for the 35,000 who will attend, but for the millions of people across the country whose values it will reflect. For the first time ever, supporters like you will have an in-depth look into what's going on in Charlotte and unprecedented access to the nominating process itself.

That's the first reason you should sign up today to get updates from the 2012 Democratic Convention. The second is that when you do, you'll automatically be entered for a chance to join us at the convention in Charlotte less than a year from now. We'll pay for your flight and hotel, all you have to do is say you want to be in the know between now and then.

Will you sign up to be part of the 2012 Convention?

In 2004, I met then-State Senator Obama at the Democratic National Convention in Boston. It was the night after the speech that catapulted him into the national spotlight.

When I greeted the future president he looked at me and said, "I don't have a seat."

Four years later I watched him accept the Democratic nomination for the Presidency of the United States in Denver.

It was a powerful moment for a lot of reasons, but for many of us who were there, the point was driven home: It was so important that we were nominating a candidate who reflects our hopes and our core values -- someone who's looking out for all Americans, not just those with the most money or the most power.

As a native North Carolinian, I couldn't be more proud to be hosting next year's convention in Charlotte, a dynamic community that reflects the diversity of our country, and of this campaign. We promise this will be our party's most inclusive convention yet.

But that can only happen if you decide to be a part of it.

They won't even vote on it

2012
Friend --

President Obama is in Dallas today urging Americans who support the American Jobs Act to demand that Congress pass it already.

Though it's been nearly a month since he laid out this plan, House Republicans haven't acted to pass it. And House Majority Leader Eric Cantor is out there actually bragging that they won't even put the jobs package up for a vote -- ever.

It's not clear which part of the bill they now object to: building roads, hiring teachers, getting veterans back to work. They're willing to block the American Jobs Act -- and they think you won't do anything about it.

But here's something you can do: Find Republican members of Congress on Twitter, call them out, and demand they pass this bill.

Be the first to use our new tool and tweet for jobs.

Here's why we built this new tool, and why it's important.

If you've written letters or sent email to Congress before, you know it can be a frustrating experience -- sometimes it takes them weeks to respond, and sometimes they don't respond at all.

But many members of Congress personally receive the messages sent to them on Twitter, so you have a better chance of getting your message directly to them.

And even if they don't respond, your message will be public -- front and center for everyone who follows you or your representative. That means their staff, other constituents, and the media will see the mounting pressure.

So tweet for jobs now:

If you don't use Twitter, you can also contact someone else who needs to hear from you about this bill: The editor of your local paper. We have a tool that lets you send a letter to the editor, and even gives you facts and tips to help you write the most effective note you can. Write one now:

The American Jobs Act is not controversial legislation.

Ideas like rebuilding our roads and bridges, repairing our public schools, and keeping teachers in our classrooms are all ideas the Republicans have said they would support or have even proposed themselves.

But they're so dead set on preventing anything from getting done on President Obama's watch that they will reverse, deny, or ignore what they've said and done in the past -- even if it costs more American jobs.

And remember: They're willing to cost you and any other American your job, or your chance at a new job, because they think that doing nothing won't cost them theirs. Tweet at Republican members of Congress now and tell them you want a vote on the jobs bill right away:

Or write a letter to the editor:

I know we've been asking a lot of you lately, and all of us here would have loved to give you a break this week after all the emails we've been sending. But the reality is that we're building a grassroots organization from the ground up even as we're supporting the President in battles that need to be won right now. And that means we've got to be willing to stay focused week after week from now through the election.

Thanks again to all of you who donated to the campaign before the end of the third quarter, and for everything else you do to have the President's back.

Thanks,

Messina
