Stand up for the Supreme Court

Organizing for Action
Diane --

When Senators Mitch McConnell and Chuck Grassley launched their crusade to derail a fair hearing for President Obama's Supreme Court nominee, sight unseen, it was an unprecedented promise by Senate leaders to obstruct the nomination process.

Since then, the President nominated the highly qualified Judge Merrick Garland -- and Senate leaders are still refusing to consider him. This country needs a fully functioning Supreme Court to rule on issues that affect all of our lives, and OFA volunteers need your help. Right now, grassroots action is more important than ever.

Chip in today to help OFA keep calling out senators who refuse to do their jobs:

Public opinion is already starting to shift in the right direction. A majority of Americans support a fair Senate hearing for Judge Garland, and I know we can keep the pressure on Senate leaders to act -- but this work depends on your support. We can't let them off the hook.

If you're ready to defend a fair confirmation process for Judge Garland, chip in whatever you can right now:

Fwd: Diane, can you make one of 97 donations from your community?

Diane, I'm so proud of everything our grassroots supporters like you have done to make sure our next president is a Democrat. But like President Obama said, that's only half the battle -- we have to make sure we're working just as hard to elect Democrats to House and Senate seats all across the country.

When the President emailed yesterday, we needed 97 donations from your community to our Democratic Majority Fund. As of now, we still need 52 before our deadline on Thursday. Will you heed the President's call and make one today?

Thanks so much.

All the best,

Friend --

Together, we've moved this country forward in ways that many thought impossible eight years ago. But our work doesn't end when I leave the White House.

I'd like to tell you that electing a Democratic president this November will be enough to make sure we can tackle the challenges of the future. I'd like to say that, even without a functioning and supportive Congress, the next president could reform our criminal justice system, transform our educational system, continue to grow our economy and shrink our uninsured rate, and protect the rights of the most vulnerable amongst us.

But that's not how our government works.

One person simply can't do this work alone -- even with remarkable support from people like you. We have three branches for a reason -- to get things done, to compromise, to balance one another. But that balance is thrown off when a group of Republican lawmakers is only focused on partisan political obstructionism, without concern for the consequences.

And just recently, we've seen scientists urging immediate action on climate change, people standing in line for hours to vote because they no longer have the full protections of the Voting Rights Act, and Republican lawmakers voting to legalize discrimination against the LGBT community.

Look: I know we are going to fight our hardest to put another Democrat in the Oval Office, but we need to also make sure that we give that person allies they can work with -- and the way we do that is by electing Democrats up and down the ballot this November. That's why the DNC has created the Democratic Majority Fund. Pitch in $3 or whatever you can before Thursday's deadline to say you're committed to giving the next Democratic president a real chance to make a difference in American lives for generations to come.

If you've saved your payment information, your donation will go through immediately.

News you can share: 4-4 Supreme Court decisions, Obamacare successes, and new climate data

Organizing for Action

Diane, you're one of the best messengers we've got in this movement. Here's some recommended reading that's easy to share.

Split decision turns up heat on Senate to find ninth justice for the Supreme Court
Kansas City Star // Dave Helling

The U.S. Supreme Court issued a simple one-sentence ruling this week in a case involving a Raymore bank and two Kansas City area developers. The particulars of the legal dispute drew little attention. But the manner of the decision made national news: for the first time since the death of Justice Antonin Scalia, the nation's highest court split 4-4 on a case. The tie meant lower court decisions would remain intact, but there would be no formal legal guidance for similar disputes to come.

Six years later, 'Obamacare' gets credit for successes
MSNBC // Steve Benen

Exactly six years ago tomorrow, President Obama signed the Affordable Care Act into law, vowing that the landmark reform effort would reduce the nation's uninsured rate while bringing renewed health security to tens of millions more. By every metric, "Obamacare" has delivered on its goals.

Scientists Warn of Perilous Climate Shift Within Decades, Not Centuries
New York Times // Justin Gillis

The nations of the world agreed years ago to try to limit global warming to a level they hoped would prove somewhat tolerable. But leading climate scientists warned on Tuesday that permitting a warming of that magnitude would actually be quite dangerous. The likely consequences would include killer storms stronger than any in modern times, the disintegration of large parts of the polar ice sheets and a rise of the sea sufficient to begin drowning the world's coastal cities before the end of this century, the scientists declared.

The Unemployment Rate for Veterans Is the Lowest in Seven Years
Wall Street Journal // Jeffrey Sparshott

The unemployment rate for American veterans fell to the lowest level in seven years in 2015, a reflection of an improving jobs market alongside programs to put servicemen and women to work. The unemployment rate for all veterans was 4.6% last year, the Labor Department said Tuesday, matching the rate in 2008.

Vice President Biden Rips Supposed 'Biden Rule'
NBC News // Corky Siemaszko

The vice president dismissed the so-called "Biden Rule" on judicial nominee hearings during election years Thursday and insisted that President Barack Obama's pick for the Supreme Court should get a Senate hearing. "It's frankly ridiculous...there is no Biden Rule," Vice President Joe Biden said in a speech at the Georgetown University Law Center. Biden said Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and the Republican leadership has been "quoting selectively" from a speech he made in 1992 about Supreme Court nominations during an election year to justify their refusal to even consider Judge Merrick Garland -- President Barack Obama's nominee to fill the seat of the late Justice Antonin Scalia.

Wind and solar are growing at a stunning pace (just not yet enough to stop climate change)
Vox // Brad Plumer

There's great news and gloomy news on climate change in this hefty new report on wind, solar, and other renewables from the UN and Bloomberg New Energy Finance. First, the confetti-tossing: Renewable energy -- mainly solar and wind -- has been growing at an astounding pace worldwide. Last year, countries plunked down $286 billion on renewable energy investments, twice what they spent on coal and gas. For the first time ever, renewables made up half of all new electric capacity installed worldwide, with 118 gigawatts coming online. Next time someone says renewables are a niche market, send them this PDF.

Fwd: Diane, I need you to add your name with mine

Yesterday, the Vice President reminded us of all the ways the Affordable Care Act has improved millions of Americans' lives over the past six years.

But Republicans want to roll back all of it -- since taking control of the House, they've voted 62 times to repeal or undermine Obamacare, even voting earlier this year in an attempt to override President Obama's veto.

So if we really want to protect the promise of affordable health care for future generations, we need to win back our majorities in Congress. That's why we created the Democratic Majority Fund -- and why we're asking supporters like you to kick-start it by donating $3 or more today.

I want to take a moment to celebrate something truly special -- the sixth anniversary of the Affordable Care Act.

Since the President signed Obamacare into law on March 23rd, 2010, 20 million Americans have gained the security and peace of mind that comes with access to affordable care. Being a woman is no longer viewed as a pre-existing condition -- and those who do have pre-existing conditions no longer have to fear losing their coverage.

This saves lives, and lifts an economic burden from hard-working Americans and their families. It means so much for so many, and it's why standing by the President as he signed this bill into law has been one of the proudest moments of my career in public service.

And in spite of all the nonsense Republicans throw out there about Obamacare killing jobs, the truth is our private sector has continuously added jobs since 2010 -- more than 14 million so far. So Obamacare works. And I put it on my word as a Biden that Barack and I will do everything we can do to make sure we elect Democrats who will keep Obamacare working beyond 2016.

So, if you are happy to celebrate six years of the Affordable Care Act and ready to protect it for more years to come, stand with me right now by adding your name:

http://my.democrats.org/Six-Years-of-Obamacare

Thanks for stepping up.

Help keep the momentum going

Organizing for Action
Diane --

There's no doubt about it: It's been a very exciting three months for this movement. But looking ahead, we're heading into a fight that could define our country for the next generation.

President Obama's Supreme Court nominee deserves a fair hearing in the Senate. It's something OFA supporters have been talking about a lot these past few weeks. But as we close the books on this quarter, I want to emphasize how important it is that we're prepared for what's to come.

Republicans on the Judiciary Committee have already committed to doing everything in their power to block Judge Merrick Garland's confirmation. Refusing to consider any nominee of President Obama -- especially a nominee like Judge Garland, who is eminently qualified and was confirmed as a federal judge with strong bipartisan support -- is extreme and irresponsible.

President Obama did his job and nominated someone that would be an exemplary judge. And OFA supporters are going to be doing theirs -- calling for a fair hearing and a timely vote for this nominee.

Will you chip in $5 or more to help fund that work right now?

If you've saved your payment information with ActBlue Express, your donation will go through immediately:

Quick donate $10 Quick donate $15 Quick donate $35 Quick donate $50 Quick donate $100 Quick donate $250 Or donate another amount.

You can bet that the extreme voices in Congress and special interests won't be spending their summer lounging on the beach. They're going to be hard at work trying to prevent the President's nominee from getting a fair hearing. It's up to us to speak out against their obstructionism. Republican leaders need to do their jobs.

Diane, we've accomplished a lot these past seven years. Our country has moved forward in countless ways. But it wouldn't have been possible without people like you raising their voices.

The nomination process for our next Supreme Court Justice won't be any different. This movement is, and always has been, powered by small dollar donations -- our average donation is just $40. And every contribution counts.

Let's keep moving this country forward -- chip in whatever you can and help support OFA's work today:

Call for a fair hearing for Merrick Garland

Organizing for Action
Diane --

President Obama has made his decision about who should fill the Supreme Court vacancy: Chief Judge Merrick Garland.

Judge Garland has a sterling record that's led to bipartisan support throughout his career, and there is no reason why his nomination for the Supreme Court should be any different. He should get what every nominee in recent history has received: a fair hearing and an up-or-down vote. Anyone who says otherwise is playing partisan political games with the highest court in our land.

Join the thousands of OFA supporters calling on Senate leaders to do their jobs, and give the President's nominee fair consideration.

Our Supreme Court Justices have the final say in matters that affect the lives of every American. In the next few months alone they'll be ruling on issues that OFA supporters have fought for for years.

More than 150,000 supporters have already spoken out in support of a fair hearing for Judge Garland. Add your voice:

Twenty million people, Diane

Diane --

This week is the sixth anniversary of the passing of the Affordable Care Act -- one of the most important bills that Barack has signed into law to improve the lives of the American people. And it's working.

It's been six years since supporters like you stood up and called on Washington to do the right thing and ensure that Americans have access to benefits like free preventive care and coverage for prescription drugs; that kids can stay on their parents' plans until they turn 26; and that no one ever has to confront lifetime limits on their insurance, or unfair costs for women, or barriers to being insured because of pre-existing conditions.

OFA supporters played a vital role in making all of this possible, and Barack and I could not be more grateful for all that you've done.

But our work isn't finished. Millions of Americans in several states would be eligible for Medicaid, but state leaders are refusing to expand it for political reasons. And millions more Americans can now get coverage under the new marketplace, but don't yet know about their options. Reaching all of those people depends on supporters like you.

OFA is one of the groups keeping up the fight for affordable health care -- add your name to join them.

Sasha and Malia are growing up fast (too fast), and as a mom, I know the peace of mind that comes with knowing that your family will have the health care they need.

A few weeks ago we learned that 20 million people now have that same sense of security because they've gained health coverage thanks to Obamacare -- and 100 million Americans who already had coverage now have additional benefits.

That's an overwhelming success for families, but there's more work to do -- say you'll stand with OFA and keep up the fight for affordable health care:

Thanks,

Michelle Obama

News you can share: Obama's environmental legacy, Judge Merrick Garland, and more

Organizing for Action

Diane, you're one of the best messengers we've got in this movement. Here's some recommended reading that's easy to share -- the latest on President Obama's Supreme Court nominee Judge Merrick Garland, the environment, and more.

Editorial: Merrick Garland for the Supreme Court
The New York Times // Editorial Board

In nominating Judge Garland to fill the vacancy created by the death of Justice Antonin Scalia last month, President Obama has taken his constitutional duty seriously, choosing a deeply respected federal appellate judge with an outstanding intellect, an impeccable legal record and the personal admiration of Republicans and Democrats.

US bars Atlantic drilling; Obama builds environmental legacy
AP // Matthew Daly

Obama, in his final year in office, is working to build an environmental legacy that includes a global agreement to curb climate change and an ambitious plan to reduce carbon pollution from coal-fired power plants. He also has imposed stricter limits on smog-causing pollution linked to asthma and has rejected the Keystone XL oil pipeline from Canada.

February breaks global temperature records by 'shocking' amount
The Guardian // Damian Carrington and Michael Slezak

February smashed a century of global temperature records by "stunning" margin, according to data released by NASA.

Efforts to link climate change to severe weather gain ground
Science Magazine // Warren Cornwall

Scientists are tying climate change to individual cases of extreme weather with increasing confidence and speed. Although people have long said it's impossible to blame climate change for any single weather event, that's no longer the case, according to a report issued 11 March by a panel of scientists for the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine.

One of the biggest myths about beating climate change has just been busted
Quartz // Steve LeVine

For the second straight year, the global economy has grown without a corresponding rise in emissions tied to climate change, reversing an almost two-century-old trend and giving some hope that heat-trapping gases can be curbed without hurting living standards.

GOP rolls out baffling double standard for Obama's Court nominee
MSNBC // Steve Benen

This is a genuinely bizarre approach to contemporary politics, but just as importantly, it's an argument that appears even more foolish given the GOP's consistent praise of Merrick Garland over the course of many years.

How Obamacare Is Changing the Startup World
Fortune // Ezekiel J. Emanuel

In 2011, just after passage of the ACA, about $1.1 billion was invested in "technology-centric, health-related companies that facilitate healthcare administration, delivery, or access." In 2014 and 2015, that figured skyrocketed to over $4.3 billion.
