| Diane, here's something I believe in strongly: Politicians shouldn't get to draw their own district lines and hand-pick their own voters. Citizens should get to decide who represents them. That's how democracy is supposed to work. And it's why Eric Holder and I teamed up to build the National Democratic Redistricting Committee with a mission of fighting for fair maps. The truth is not everyone wants to play by the rules. In the last year, we've witnessed Republican-controlled states take the unprecedented step of redrawing their congressional maps in the middle of the decade. They even admitted they're doing this to gain an unfair advantage in the midterm elections. As Democrats, we can't just copy the same bad behavior. Nobody wants to see us abandon the rule of law or show zero regard for the truth. If that's how Democrats fight back, then we lose what we're fighting for in the first place. But that doesn't mean we have to sit on our hands, either. We can't pretend this redistricting crisis isn't happening. That's why states like California and Virginia have decided to fight back in a way that lets the people decide — putting referendums on the ballot that would temporarily level the playing field by ensuring Republicans can't gerrymander their way to a House majority in the midterms. California voters overwhelmingly approved that approach last fall. Next month, Virginians have the opportunity to do the same. Right now, volunteers are actively organizing to help get out the vote in this special election — in the first weekend of early voting, our team reached over 350,000 Virginians. Make no mistake: Republicans are desperate to hold onto power and avoid accountability. But this movement was built to stop them. We might not be able to outspend the powerful interests on the other side, but we can out-organize them, out-work them, and outlast them. Each of us has a role to play to help preserve our democracy — not just in November, but for decades to come. Will you make a donation to the NDRC today and invest in this critical pro-democracy work? Let's go, Barack Obama
