Betsy DeVos may roll back these key protections

DianeA, Last week, Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos announced upcoming changes to key protections for sexual assault survivors on college campuses. Here's what happened: In 2011, the Department of Education released a letter to guide college campuses through handling sexual violence issues in adherence to Title IX. The letter not only called out the right -- ensured by the Supreme Court -- for all students to have a learning environment free of sexual violence, but also represented a promise that the government would enforce that right. Now, the Trump Administration may walk that promise back. Add your name if you agree: The decision to change the way we handle campus sexual assault issues must not be taken lightly -- and must, above all else, allow for fair and thoughtful investigations that support survivors. Sexual violence on college campuses is an epidemic in our country. The prevalence of assault is hard to accurately measure, and many survivors may not feel able to speak out or report their experiences. Studies suggest that nearly 1 in 5 women has been sexually assaulted during their time at school, and more than 40% of dating college women report experiencing violent and abusive dating behaviors. This is simply inexcusable -- and while we work to stop this culture of widespread violence, we also must be dedicated to supporting survivors at the administrative and legislative levels. That’s why Tim has introduced legislation to require all campuses to have a survivor advocate, helping to ensure that students can feel safe and get access to the resources they need. And it's why Betsy DeVos must think twice before rolling back key protections that the Obama Administration established. Fifty four years ago, millions of Americans marched on Washington, D.C.

They came from all walks of life -- young and old, black and white, of many beliefs and backgrounds -- but they marched for an extraordinary vision.

They marched for the America they knew they could build if enough of them stood together as citizens. They marched for justice, equality, and freedom.

They marched for the right to vote.

And now, fifty four years later, we're still speaking out.

This month, OFA is launching a new initiative to get more people registered to vote. We need supporters like you to get involved.

Still today, right now, across the country, there is a deliberate, systemic attempt to make it harder to participate in the democratic process. Efforts like these disproportionately affect the members of our most vulnerable communities: students, seniors, minorities, the poor and the disabled, and those in rural areas.

We must not let that happen. We must continue to work for a more inclusive democracy.

President Obama likes to say that you and I, as citizens, have the power to set this country's course. He's right -- and that power comes from the ballot.

It's the most powerful tool we have in our democracy, and it's in our hands. Let's use everything we have to protect it, and make sure we understand what a privilege and duty it is to act on it.
