What just happened in Congress

Organizing for Action
Diane --

Take note of what just happened in Congress.

Both chambers have now passed a bipartisan budget deal, and it's on its way to President Obama's desk for him to sign -- we've come a long way in the ten weeks since House leaders let an extreme minority shut down the government.

That's because of you. That's the power of organizing.

OFA supporters spent weeks telling Speaker John Boehner to stand up to the Tea Party Republicans in his caucus. More than a million of you kept the pressure on during the government shutdown, and we're still seeing the impact of that work.

It's not a coincidence that John Boehner finally put his foot down with extreme members of his party and helped get this budget deal through.

If you'd like to send a quick thank-you note, head on over to Twitter and drop @SpeakerBoehner a message.

It's good news that Congress got this done -- this deal funds the government for two years, rolls back some of the devastating sequester cuts that were scheduled to go into effect in January, and continues to reduce the deficit. No one got everything they wanted in this deal -- but it's a step forward and a positive sign for what can happen when members of Congress decide to work together.

But let's be clear: There is still work to be done, and there's a lot on the House's plate when the members return in January.

One thing on a lot of our minds right now is the 1.3 million unemployed Americans who stand to lose their unemployment benefits on December 28th, just three days after Christmas. Congress needs to fix that as soon as they return.

For now, let's hope this budget deal is a sign that more progress is to come.

Tweet Speaker Boehner a thank-you note for finding the courage to stand up to the extreme voices in his party, for all of our sakes:
