Our nation's founders laid out a constitution that solidified three independent, co-equal branches of government -- each to provide a check on the other.
It's a system that has endured more than two centuries, guiding America's exceptional story.
But today those very institutions, the building blocks of our democracy, are under attack, and we find ourselves at a crossroads:
We have an executive branch that has consistently shown contempt for our justice system, and this Congress, driven by cynical partisan politics, has abandoned their responsibility to deter it.
In this environment, a fair-minded and independent Supreme Court has never been more essential.
We have no choice but to fight for it. We've come too far, and organized for too long to resign ourselves to the consequences that lay ahead if we stop working.
We deserve a court that fairly protects the rights of all Americans, not just the powerful, self-interested few.
When President Obama nominated Merrick Garland, a consensus judge with irreproachable credentials, to the Supreme Court, Mitch McConnell blocked his appointment for a year -- then changed the rules to jam through a political ideologue.
He sees Justice Kennedy's retirement as an opportunity to do it again.
We must reject the president's hyperpartisan "short list" of extreme judges. As citizens we have a responsibility to demand a jurist whose driving principle is the one etched into the court: Equal justice under law.
Say you'll fight for one:
