We can’t just pretend this isn’t happening:

This is about preserving our democracy not just for November, but for decades to come.

Diane, here's something I believe in strongly: Politicians shouldn't get to draw their own district lines and hand-pick their own voters. Citizens should get to decide who represents them.

That's how democracy is supposed to work. And it's why Eric Holder and I teamed up to build the National Democratic Redistricting Committee with a mission of fighting for fair maps.

The truth is not everyone wants to play by the rules. In the last year, we've witnessed Republican-controlled states take the unprecedented step of redrawing their congressional maps in the middle of the decade. They even admitted they're doing this to gain an unfair advantage in the midterm elections.

As Democrats, we can't just copy the same bad behavior. Nobody wants to see us abandon the rule of law or show zero regard for the truth. If that's how Democrats fight back, then we lose what we're fighting for in the first place.

But that doesn't mean we have to sit on our hands, either. We can't pretend this redistricting crisis isn't happening.

That's why states like California and Virginia have decided to fight back in a way that lets the people decide — putting referendums on the ballot that would temporarily level the playing field by ensuring Republicans can't gerrymander their way to a House majority in the midterms. California voters overwhelmingly approved that approach last fall. Next month, Virginians have the opportunity to do the same.

Right now, volunteers are actively organizing to help get out the vote in this special election — in the first weekend of early voting, our team reached over 350,000 Virginians.

Make no mistake: Republicans are desperate to hold onto power and avoid accountability. But this movement was built to stop them.

We might not be able to outspend the powerful interests on the other side, but we can out-organize them, out-work them, and outlast them.

Each of us has a role to play to help preserve our democracy — not just in November, but for decades to come. Will you make a donation to the NDRC today and invest in this critical pro-democracy work?

Let's go,

Republicans need to face the voters

Republicans can't win on their policies, so instead they are trying to cheat – but we can stop them.

Diane,

When you hold public office in a democracy, you can't hide from the voters. Our system of government was created by the founders to be of the people, by the people, and for the people

Whether or not someone voted for you, every elected official should listen to their constituents' hopes and dreams, and their struggles. Because listening to people and building relationships and understanding our common goals is the best way to bring some of them along with you.

These days, that's not what's happening. With the midterm elections approaching, Donald Trump and the Republican party aren't trying to persuade voters to see things their way — they're trying to sidestep them altogether.

Republicans know their policies are deeply unpopular, so they are rewriting the rules to try to rig the outcome of the midterms before voters can even weigh in. They would rather manipulate maps to lock in their power than change their policies in response to their constituents.

Let's be clear: This isn't how our democracy is supposed to work.

Attorney General Eric Holder and I started the NDRC so the people would have more power to shape the future of our country — and right now, we're doing everything we can to preserve our democracy so we can ultimately make it stronger and fairer. Can we count on you to support this mission with a donation right now?

The latest redistricting crisis started last summer when the White House persuaded Texas lawmakers to redraw the state's congressional map by dismantling districts where voters of color had been able to elect their candidate of choice. Missouri and North Carolina joined in, manipulating their own maps to try to steal enough seats to maintain control of the House of Representatives in the 2026 election.

And this fight is just beginning. At the start of this new year, several state legislatures are thinking about redrawing their maps to benefit Republicans. Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis announced the legislature would hold a special session this spring to make its current gerrymander even worse.

It's on people like us to fight for fairness and to ensure that politicians are accountable to the people they were elected to serve.

The NDRC is pushing back against these unprecedented power grabs. Join me in taking a stand for our democracy — make a donation of whatever you can today.

Thank you,

Barack Obama
