| Diane, When you hold public office in a democracy, you can't hide from the voters. Our system of government was created by the founders to be of the people, by the people, and for the people. Whether or not someone voted for you, every elected official should listen to their constituents' hopes and dreams, and their struggles. Because listening to people and building relationships and understanding our common goals is the best way to bring some of them along with you. These days, that's not what's happening. With the midterm elections approaching, Donald Trump and the Republican party aren't trying to persuade voters to see things their way — they're trying to sidestep them altogether. Republicans know their policies are deeply unpopular, so they are rewriting the rules to try to rig the outcome of the midterms before voters can even weigh in. They would rather manipulate maps to lock in their power than change their policies in response to their constituents. Let's be clear: This isn't how our democracy is supposed to work. Attorney General Eric Holder and I started the NDRC so the people would have more power to shape the future of our country — and right now, we're doing everything we can to preserve our democracy so we can ultimately make it stronger and fairer. Can we count on you to support this mission with a donation right now?
The latest redistricting crisis started last summer when the White House persuaded Texas lawmakers to redraw the state's congressional map by dismantling districts where voters of color had been able to elect their candidate of choice. Missouri and North Carolina joined in, manipulating their own maps to try to steal enough seats to maintain control of the House of Representatives in the 2026 election. And this fight is just beginning. At the start of this new year, several state legislatures are thinking about redrawing their maps to benefit Republicans. Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis announced the legislature would hold a special session this spring to make its current gerrymander even worse. It's on people like us to fight for fairness and to ensure that politicians are accountable to the people they were elected to serve. Thank you, Barack Obama
