The redistricting process isn't just about where districts are drawn -- it's also about how many districts are drawn in each state. Every 10 years, states receive an updated number of U.S. House seats based on their population from the latest census count. On Apportionment Day, states discover if they've been allotted additional seats, no new seats, or if they've lost seats.
This process is an important step in making sure our maps better reflect our communities. It's intended to provide folks with equal and fair representation in the House of Representatives, but as we know, map manipulators can often take power away from communities by drawing districts in unfair ways.

I want to draw your attention to All On The Line's work in several states that will be on the front lines of the apportionment process: Texas, Florida, North Carolina, and Georgia. These states gained a combined four seats through reapportionment for the next decade. The redistricting process in each of these states is different and requires a customized, targeted strategy, but the final maps could have a large impact on national politics.
In North Carolina, the All On The Line team has already done incredible work. Organizers in the Tar Heel State harnessed grassroots energy to demand a public and transparent process in the 2019 court-ordered redraw of state legislative maps. And now, AOTL is continuing to build organizing capacity for 2021 through a first-of-its-kind leadership program for activists in the state.
In Texas, hundreds of AOTL volunteers are being trained to demand transparency. And in Georgia and Florida, the All On The Line team has helped build impressive coalitions designed to keep the people drawing the maps honest. In fact, Florida's AOTL partners just launched a brand new legislator pledge that encourages them to commit to a fair process.
Over the past couple of years, this movement's state-by-state approach has succeeded -- but there's still much work to be done.
With apportionment on the horizon, the All On The Line team is working to guarantee fair representation for everyone. If we don't, opponents of fair redistricting can take advantage of newly gained or lost districts to deny people the representation they deserve.
