Want to know why I care so much about ending gerrymandering? It's because I saw firsthand how it contributes to partisanship and polarization.
During the Obama presidency I was at the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee. I watched how Republican after Republican fought against rational, reasonable policies simply because of how their district map skewed their incentive and motivation as an elected official. It was terrible for our democracy, and it still is today.
I'm so proud that thanks to supporters like you, the NDRC and our partners have been able to shift the balance of power in many states so politicians can't just rig the maps in their favor. And I'm even prouder that thanks to our work, thousands of people have gotten involved in the redistricting process, held their elected officials accountable, and showed up at commission meetings and legislative hearings to demand fair maps.
But now we have to keep that energy up ahead of the 2022 elections, which will be a critical turning point in the fight for fair maps.
