Summer is here and you are probably gearing up for at least a little time spent relaxing and vacationing with family and friends. At the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS), we look forward to summer too because it means the launch of our annual United We Serve: Let's Read. Let's Move. initiative and we'd like you to join us.   Let's Read. Let's Move. focuses on some of the most important issues that face our nation's children today including summer learning loss that contributes to low academic achievement, childhood obesity and summer hunger. We can make a difference when it comes to maintaining or improving students' academic achievement.  Children who are not engaged in learning between school years suffer from "summer learning loss."  Reading just five books during the summer can make all the difference for many children and we can help make sure these students are encouraged to read. Childhood obesity is another issue that faces many of our youth.  Having access to welcoming play spaces or other activities that get them up and moving is both a fun way to spend the summer and a way to increase health.  The CNCS Let's Read. Let's Move. initiative is proud to support First Lady Michelle Obama's Let's Move! call to get children moving and exercising all year. Finally, many children who have access to free or reduced-price meals during the school year do not have that resource when the school year ends.  Getting students and parents information on summer food programs that can provide them a nutritious meal to thrive is key to ending summer hunger. VIDEO: The petition delivery

Diane -- Last Thursday in Washington, D.C., I joined 30 OFA volunteers and three gun violence survivors as they delivered our petition to Congress with more than 1.4 million signatures. It was an amazing day, and a reminder that we're nowhere near done with this fight. Take a look at the highlights -- and say you're with us, committed to keep fighting to help reduce gun violence: What impressed me most on Thursday was getting a chance to talk with survivors like Pam Simon, Sami Rahamim, and Lori Haas. You'll see in the video that these folks have turned their personal pain into action, and a force for good. It's enough to change hearts and minds. OFA volunteers got a chance to meet with a few leaders in Congress, like Rep. Mike Thompson, Senate Majority Whip Dick Durbin, and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, who asked all of us to keep fighting -- and even gave folks a few tips on how to keep the pressure on their fellow lawmakers. Senator Reid even tweeted: "Today, we received a petition from over 1.4 million Americans who demand action on background checks. This fight is not over." I am more confident than ever that, if we keep working and making our voices heard, we can and will win this. The petition delivery was a big moment -- but it's not the end of this fight. Tin foil hat alert

House Speaker John Boehner and the chairman of the House Science Committee are both unsure whether the science behind climate change -- the stuff that shows pretty clearly that carbon pollution produced by humans is damaging our environment -- is real. Instead, they're on the record saying things like this: "The idea that carbon dioxide is a carcinogen that is harmful to our environment is almost comical. Every time we exhale, we exhale carbon dioxide. Every cow in the world, you know, when they do what they do, you've got more carbon dioxide." - John Boehner, April 2009 As long as our members of Congress continue to develop their own theories behind climate change, we will fall further and further behind in our ability to make actual progress on this issue. Unicorns exist**

Diane -- If I said to you: "Unicorns exist, I totally just saw one galloping down the street," most likely you'd give me a sad look and get on with your day. But what if House Speaker Boehner and the chairman of the House Science Committee said they didn't know if the science behind climate change was real. (Yeah. That actually happened.) Now obviously, it doesn't matter if I just make stuff up about unicorns. But it matters, and it matters a whole lot, that so many of our elected officials in Washington who represent us are denying science and using that denial to refuse to take action on climate change. It's actually dangerous -- and it matters how we react. Each and every day that congressional leaders hold on to their bizarre fantasy world, OFA is going to be there, not letting them get away with it. They succeeded in scaring members of Congress into voting against something that 90 percent of Americans -- and 74 percent of NRA members -- support.
