DianeA,
My name is Alyssa Milano and I do not have equal rights under the law.
Why? Because I am a woman, and there is no constitutional amendment guaranteed to protect me.
That’s why we must ratify the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA), which states that "Women shall have equal rights in the United States and every place subject to its jurisdiction. Equality of rights under the law shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of sex."
Thankfully, Congress held a hearing on the ERA yesterday -- the first in 36 years. This is a huge step, DianeA, but it's the first of many before we see the ERA ratified. We need to keep pushing if we want to truly achieve equal rights.
That’s why I’m writing today, on behalf of my friend Joe Biden, to ask you to sign your name with Joe and me to show your support for the ERA.
Will you sign your name, DianeA? You can do that here: Joe realizes how important it is for us to speak up on this issue and not be complacent in the fight for equality. - He has been a leader in the fight for the Equal Rights Amendment and reintroduced it in the Senate.
- He wrote and spearheaded the Violence Against Women Act, when sexual violence was considered a family matter.
- He brought the issue of campus sexual assault front and center and created a White House task force to develop resources for survivors.
- He fought with President Obama to pass the Paycheck Fairness Act and the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act.
And, he’s continuing to fight for constitutional equality for women.
Joe and I are working hard to make sure this issue stays front and center. Getting the word out is the first step.
So DianeA, I’m aiming for 50,000 signers on Joe’s petition in support of the Equal Rights Amendment. Can you be one of them, DianeA? Thanks for reading. Yours in the fight,
Alyssa Milano |
