Diane -- As the redistricting process unfolds we see two clear visions for our democracy.
1. The 2011 playbook on steroids: Republican-controlled legislatures unleashed historic gerrymandering during the last redistricting cycle. Some studies showed the maps gave Republicans up to 22 additional seats in the U.S. House. One difference between then and now? In 2011, they drew the maps secretly in "bunkers" in places like Ohio. They don't even try to hide it now. The head of the Republican State Leadership Committee said the 2020 elections "put the Republican Party in a position where we're able to secure a decade of power across the country."
Or, 2. An unprecedented response: Simply put, we've built the biggest grassroots movement to combat gerrymandering in history. Folks like you have chipped in what you could -- 176 donations just yesterday. Thousands have attended trainings, and many are now giving public testimony in redistricting hearings. Thousands more have picked up the phone to call Congress to demand voting rights legislation. These steps are making a big impact. They're the key to stopping the assault on our values and democracy we see pouring out of state legislatures.
The contrast couldn't be more clear. It's legislators shutting voters out of the process to gerrymander themselves unfair majorities or we, the people, demanding to be heard as maps get drawn.
President Obama told our supporters, "This movement's ability to win the fight for fair maps depends on the support of people like you." Will you help us win the fight? Will you pitch in today to help us deliver fair maps for millions of Americans?
