Hold Senate leaders accountable

We're about to bring it. Join in. Diane -- Next week, the Senate returns from its seven-week recess -- and there's some important unfinished business to attend to. At the top of senators' lists should be filling the seat that's still vacant on the Supreme Court. President Obama's nominee, the highly qualified Judge Merrick Garland, who has previously received bipartisan support, has now waited 167 days for a hearing and a vote. That's a record-breaking amount of time: No Supreme Court nominee has ever waited longer than 125 days to be confirmed unless they've withdrawn, and the Senate hasn't even held a hearing for Judge Garland -- much less a vote. That's unacceptable, and it's up to us to make sure Senate leaders know it -- which is exactly what we're going to do while they're in session. OFA supporters across the country are gearing up to increase the pressure. Say you'll join them in letting senators know you demand action on the Supreme Court vacancy. Just recently -- during his seven-week vacation -- Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell told a crowd that one of his proudest moments was telling President Obama that he would refuse to fill the empty seat on the highest court, effectively gridlocking our judicial system. McConnell should be ashamed of refusing to do his job, not proud. And as long as obstructionists in the Senate continue to stand with McConnell, they should be ashamed, too. They're preventing our Supreme Court from handing down decisions that affect millions of people. Progress on this issue will take everyone speaking up. The nerve of this guy

Pitch in to the Stop Trump Fund before our monthly fundraising deadline on August 31st: DONATE Diane -- Donald Trump is trying his best to diversify his supporter base with his new pitch to African Americans: "What the hell do you have to lose?" He spewed a litany of inaccurate statistics and untrue stereotypes into the microphone, then he walked off stage as if he'd just delivered Martin Luther King, Jr.'s "I Have a Dream" speech. He thinks he can spit in the wind and tell folks it's raining, but Trump's history provides us with everything we need to properly forecast his presidency: In the early days of Trump's real estate business, he was investigated and sued by the Department of Justice for housing discrimination when he refused to rent apartments to African Americans. Trump was the face of the "birther" movement, raising the question of whether or not President Obama was an American citizen to anyone he could while demanding to see the President's "long-form" birth certificate. Throughout his campaign, the GOP nominee has repeatedly spread multiple inaccurate and race-baiting tweets with false crime statistics about African Americans, and openly supported violence that occurred at one of his events against a Black Lives Matter protestor when he said, "Maybe [the protestor] should've been roughed up." He's been endorsed by Ku Klux Klan and white supremacist group members -- including David Duke, whose Senate candidacy in Louisiana is based largely on Trump's Republican primary success. Duke's co-host on their white supremacist radio show even beamed in delight over Trump's hiring of the ultra-conservative propagandist Steve Bannon, saying that "We appear to have taken over the Republican Party." The same guy who called Mexican immigrants criminals and rapists, said that he wants to ban Muslims from entering America, and has been sued multiple times for racial discrimination against African Americans at his properties now fashions himself the new standard-bearer for racial equality in America? I don't think so, Diane. Donald Trump is no advocate for equality on any level, but he could still become president. It's up to all of us to stop this guy -- so let's make sure Donald Trump and the Republicans propping him up as fit to lead all lose on Election Day.
