My 'Bama Says: President Obama on fair maps and protecting democracy

At the NDRC, we've helped drive important progress in the fight for fair maps since our launch in 2017. But it didn't happen overnight — here's a short history of how we got to where we are today:

2017: A.G. Holder launches the NDRC with the support of President Obama, determined not to let Republicans gerrymander again. 2017-2020: We work to help elect state-level Democrats who can make the difference in achieving fair maps and support redistricting reform efforts. 2021: As redistricting kicks off, we put staff and volunteers on the ground in key states – and we make significant progress toward fair maps! 2022: But Republicans double down on their gerrymandering, assisted by a dangerously inconsistent U.S. Supreme Court. Help us keep up the fight!

Now, not only are GOP politicians like Governor Ron DeSantis clinging to gerrymandered maps, they're also spreading Trump's Big Lie about the 2020 election, doubling down on voter suppression, and even waging attacks on election officials and processes!

So our strategy is evolving in response. To quote President Obama, "The fight for fair maps is part of the fight to protect our democracy." That's why we're now fighting both GOP gerrymandering and the anti-democracy forces trying to take hold in the states. We're targeting 17 Democracy Target states this November, and this summer we announced our initial candidate endorsements!

But the stakes are incredibly high – when we say this election could be our last chance to save our democracy, we're not exaggerating.
