Friend,

In the past few weeks, the U.S. Senate has voted on whether to advance the Freedom to Vote Act and the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act, both of which are necessary to restore the right to vote and defend our democracy.

Republicans blocked both bills -- they wouldn't even move these bills to the floor for debate. As my colleague President Barack Obama said, "Republicans in Washington are trying to make it harder, not easier, for Americans to vote." This goes against everything I've fought for in my career in public service and as the U.S. attorney general.

But I refuse to give up. I will keep fighting as hard as I can to secure voting rights at the federal level and end gerrymandering in the states. Because frankly, this is not a fight we can afford to lose. Can I count on you to fight alongside me, friend?

I know the people are with us. Polling shows that more than six in 10 Americans support the Freedom to Vote Act and nearly seven in 10 support the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act. And in the states, where the NDRC is fighting brazen gerrymandering attempts by the GOP, citizens and voters are rising up.

They are taking gerrymandered maps to court in states like North Carolina and Texas. They are defending against Republican attempts to undermine fair maps in states like Oregon. They are coming out by the hundreds to attend hearings in states like Wisconsin.

The NDRC is committed to supporting these people who are demanding fairness. But I'll be straight with you: How much we can do, both in the states and at the federal level, depends on what kind of support we have from this community.

We have a choice, Diane. We can let Republicans get away with their plan to dismantle democracy. Or we can continue fighting for the freedom to vote and for fair maps. Will you fight with us? Will you pitch in?

Thank you,
Eric H. Holder, Jr.
